Looking for Sponsors

The Old Dominion Summer Classic is being held May 22 in Stuarts Draft. We are asking the members to start looking for class sponsors for this event. Amy Hall already covered A Class - Orvis Co is sponsoring it. THANK YOU AMY for thinking ahead !!
Now the rest of us need to get on the ball and find 7 more. Remember, the $50 per class sponsorship helps keep our State Singles entry fees down. If you have questions about this, just give me a call.   Pat

BUY A BRICK for HALL OF FAME

Excerpt from a letter to the Regional Directors from NHPA, Dick Hanson, Sec/Treasurer

"The NHPA Hall of Fame and museum in Wentzville, MO is open. The new facility still needs the support of our members. The NHPA/NHPF Buy-A-Brick program is ongoing. If you have not already purchased one please consider it. We have ample bricks available for purchase. Let your name be part of the history of the NHPA Hall of Fame. Stop in and visit, or make plans to enter any one of a number of tournaments held there. It is a great place to pitch. "

In 2009, the VaHPA council purchased a brick on behalf of our members. You can get more information about the program, brick pricing and sizes by clicking this link.  Buy a brick and show your support.

5th Annual SnowShoe Festival
By Pat Snelgrove

2010 Snowshoe Festival trophy

Chuck enjoying the 50 degree day

And WHAT a festival it was !!

We had about 6” of snow on the ground on the south side, and on the north side, was grass – wet, but grass none the less, and plenty of sun in sky. The day turned out so pleasant, that most of us played in our shirtsleeves!! Find out who won! (Continued on the next page!)

POWHATAN Court Project

Joe Presho is asking for member assistance in getting attention to proposed courts at Powhatan Fighting Creek Park (next to the new Powhatan library about 1/2 mile east from the corner of 522 and 60.)

The Parks & Rec dept has the proposed area all roped off, anticipating construction of 6 courts. Depending on usage and activity, they’ve indicated they’re willing to go for 12. HOWEVER, Joe feels they’re ‘on hold’ waiting for public demand

SO if you want to see these courts built in Powhatan, feel free to contact  Kevin Myers at  Phone#   804-598-7835, Fax#  804-598-1304

CHESTERFIELD Court Project

Gary Martin is working with Sports Quest, a private organization that has 250 acres they’re developing in Chesterfield County (near the intersection of Rte 288 & Rte 76).

Look up the project scope at Greater Richmond Partnership by clicking here.  Or just search “Sport Quest” on the internet.

It’s exciting stuff!! Unless things take a surprising turn, this WILL happen within the next couple of years.
Stay on top of this exciting development, the whole Sports Quest park will have Olympic training facilities and accommodate multiple sporting venues.

By Latanya Turner

The Isle of Wight County Fair Horseshoe Tournament began at 10am on September 19, 2009. The over 25 participants were ready and the air was crisp! Ronnie Reeves (defending champion from last year) of Suffolk, Virginia won in first place and Bobby Evans new to our tournament of Courtland, Virginia earned the second place spot in the Singles Tournament. When the Doubles Tournament was over Ronnie Reeves and partner Jim Allen also of Suffolk, Virginia took the top spot with second place honors going to Bobby Evans and his partner Elvis Blunt of Emporia, Virginia.

Good Bye my Friends.

The toll of time, Matthew Taylor

A small man in stature, certainly strong, his weak heart gave way.

It is with great sadness posting this “Toll of Time”. Our friend Matthew Taylor from Richmond died last Sunday November 29th from a massive heart attack. A very kind and gentle man we will miss his enthusiasm for our sport.

Mimm’s Funeral Home, 1827 Hull Street, Richmond (804-232-3874) is handling the arrangements. There’s no formal wake scheduled, viewing is open – friends, family, all – Wednesday starting 4pm and then all day Thursday. His Funeral will be Friday at 1pm at the Gravel Hill Baptist Church, 2600 Gravel Hill Road, Richmond.

If you want to send a card along to his family the home address is 1012 Kingsway Road, Richmond, VA 23225

The Fall Potluck tournament has been rescheduled to October 10 . Same deal, bring a meal, desert or snacks to share and your entry fee will be reduced by $5. 2:00 PM start time. Please call Jeremi, Yogi or Pat and let them know if you can make it..

The October 17 VaHPA business meeting has changed locations.

Due to construction at the Fishersville Library they have closed the meeting rooms. The new location is at the Stuarts Draft's Schneider park complex. The building across the field from the pavilion  is where the meeting will be held - same building as the restrooms. In the meeting room, second floor. Club Presidents or their representives are asked to attend to discuss our state business and set the 2010 schedule. Everyone is invited to attend.  See you there! Kevin

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

From the  National Horseshoe Pitchers Association

The NHPA Executive Council has unanimously voted to enact the following Playing Rules change, effective immediately.

The current Rule can be found in the RGS Book, pgs. 7-8, Rule 1 - PITCHING DIVISIONS; Section E - Elder Men (introductory information on eligibility).

Currently reads:
Section E – Elder Men (become eligible to pitch in the Elders Division at any time during the calendar year that they become seventy (70) years old)

Changed to:
Section E – Elder Men (become eligible to pitch in the Elders Division upon purchase of an NHPA card dated for the calendar year that they become seventy (70) years old)

Related Information: Each year NHPA cards become available for purchase during October of the previous year. For example, you can buy your 2010 card during October of this year. One benefit to new members is that they can begin pitching in Fall Leagues and/or Tournaments without having to purchase both a 2009 and 2010 card.

Here are some important reasons for the above Rules change, which applies to all Open Men who may choose to move into the Elders Division:

1 - Under the "old" rule, any male pitcher who is eligible to "move up" into the Elders Division on January 1st of 2010 must begin the Fall/Winter pitching season at a distance of 40 feet for league and tournament play, through December 31st of this year. On January 1st he may then "move up", but must first re-qualify at this shorter distance, as per our existing rule. This re-qualifying requirement and pitching distance change/transition is difficult, and is also disruptive during a league season that may have started in the Fall and will continue into the new year. The new rule, which allows Elders to "move up" right after purchasing their 2010 card (and before most Winter leagues begin), will eliminate this problem.

2 - The NHPA has received numerous concerns/complaints from first-year Elders who have not had sufficient time, after January 1, to get in the 4 sanctioned events that are required for entering the World Tournament. For this reason, some have not been able to enter the World Tournament for that first year. Meeting this requirement is especially difficult in some or our Northern Charters where severe weather/road conditions, during the Winter and early Spring months, may prevent travel to scheduled tournaments. Also, in some of the larger states, getting to a tournament may require very long driving distances. For these Elders, those 4+ months (January-midMay); allow a much smaller "window" of time than for the rest of us who have 12 months to get in our 4 required events. This change will allow our Elders an additional 3 months (7+ months total) to get in their 4 required events for entering our World Tournament.

3 - Why change the Rule now? According to our Bylaws, it would be 3 more years before a Rules change proposal such as this could be presented to our delegates for discussion and voting. This proposal should have been voted on this year, but it was not proposed by any of our members. Our Council does have the authority to initiate changes such as this; that are for the good and welfare of our members, and waiting 3 more years for this change just didn't make good sense to us. Although this change has been enacted by our unanimous Council vote, it may be overturned next year by a 2/3 majority vote of the seated delegates at the 2010 NHPA Convention in Iowa. We can't imagine, however, why anyone would be opposed to this change.

In horseshoes,
The NHPA Council

The 2009 Grady Whaley Autumn Classic

The 2009 Welcome Sign for the Grady Whaley

24 courts at the Rock Springs Horseshoe Club

By Charlie Helton

The 8th Annual Grady Whaley Autumn Classic was held Sat. Sept 19, 2009 in Kingsport, Tn. at the Rock Springs Horseshoe Courts. Attending were pitchers from; Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama. The weatherman called for rain but it held off long enough to play. You could not asked for better weather. We enjoyed great competition and sportsmanship through out the tournament. If you missed it, you missed a good time! (continued on the next page)

By Kevin Snelgrove

Traveling from north to south across Virginia is every bit of 321 miles if you are on I-81. Did you know Kingsport Tennessee, home to the Grady Whaley Horseshoe pitching tournament is only another 20 miles south. For Pat and I, it was a short four hour ride, much like going to the Chesapeake and Suffolk area. Only a 240 mile ride! Traffic was not that bad but the rain going through Christiansburg certain slowed us down. The rain was unbelievable, we could barely see 100 feet in front of us. (continued on the next page)

What a great State Singles!

As President and Tournament Director for the Virginia State Singles it is hard to determine who I should thank first, the pitchers, the score keepers, the state council, the hosting club or Mother Nature for such a smooth event. A couple of small glitches but nothing major happened in the time table of the event. (continued on the next page) more below.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GUARDIAN ANGELS?

Thomas Banks (center) has been a backbone member of the Richmond Horseshoe Club since it beginning is so grateful for a second chance on life, thanks to the heroic efforts of a few fellow pitchers to save his life. If it was not for their efforts he would not be here! (continued on the next page)

What is harder to achieve in the NHPA organization than a perfect game?
Believe it or not, getting your 50 Year Membership is tougher than a perfect game.
By Kevin Snelgrove

Floyd Hix receiving his 50 year patch

Looking at the foot steps of a man that has been a big part of the Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association is amazing. A walking encyclopedia of knowledge, Floyd can recite faster than my computer can, the names, dates and results of events at the time I was barely born. How he does it just blows my mind, but it shows his devotion to a passion he loves, pitching horseshoes.

At our state singles general membership meeting I had the pleasure to present to Floyd Hix his 50 year membership patch in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. Can he get his 100 year membership? Knowing Floyd, he stands a good chance, providing he lives to be the oldest man in the world at 135 years. With today's technology it may happen. But if Floyd misses his 100 year patch one of his children might be a first. Only time will tell.

Thank you Floyd for all you have done to organize and promote the sport of pitching horseshoes..

From the Presidents Desk

Where has this summer gone? It seemed to have started late with the heat and humidity and here it is almost fall. Hurricane season is here and as of today (Sunday 8/30) it does not look like we will have to worry about one for our States Singles next week. Ninety-six pitchers signed up. The pitching schedule is pretty tight. Please attend the State meeting at noon on Saturday (rain or shine) and check in at least an hour ahead of your pitching time. If you have not heard from Pat as to when you pitch, please give her a call. Kevin

Wow!!! When we selected July 18 for our second tournament for 2009, the big question was "What do we do about the heat?" Past experience indicated that the temperature, humidity and direct sun can be a real challenge, particularly for our more senior players. This year we got lucky. The temperature stayed in the eighties and the humidity was down

The second WOW was that we had forty five players. This is the biggest turnout (Continued on the next page)
