Message From The
President
Happy New Year and I hope you all had
a great holiday. I first want to start
recognizing our new 2nd Vice Kara Vannoy
to the team. Kara is the Tournament
Director for the Ruther Glen Club. She has
the leadership and experience and will be
a great excess to Executive Council.
As your incoming President, I am prepared
for the challenges that face me. I
am also ready for the tough decisions that
go along with the President’s job.
I do want to assure you that the decisions
made will be in the best interest of the
VAHPA and the sport of horseshoes.
I will review the present and the past
situation. There are many challenges
that are on the table to review and be addressed.
My main concerns are to review and make
recommendations to the Council on controlling
spending and making sure the money is spent
with the best interest of the VAHPA in mind.
The other challenge I have pledged to work
on is to grow the sport of horseshoes and
membership.
I am a person who encourages feedback
and look forward to hearing from all of
your concerns. If you have some good
ideas on how to promote the sport, don’t
hesitate to drop an e-mail or give me a
call. Last but not least, keep the
sport fun. I strongly encourage all
tournament director please have a copy of
the By-Laws and RGS RULE BOOK on hand at
your sanction tournament.
This is very important. Be aware
of unsportsmanlike behavior during a tournament
or your league play is grounds for disciplinary
action. Please, stress Safety, Good
Conduct and Good Sportsmanship. Be
fair, play fair. We’re all out
to have a good time. This is the greatest
family sport and I want to make sure the
sport is one we can all enjoy. Thank
You and I look forward to serving you as
your new VAHPA President. Wish you
all have a great season and “LET UM
RING in 2012.

Stepping down
as President I am confident our new officers
will make a good team.
The
2012 Scheduled is posted, please review
it. The first event if the year is the Snow
Shoe Festival (non-sanctioned) on Jan 14th,
followed by Ruther Glenn Invitational on Jan
21st , which is pre-registered
(Registration form online or) Please call
Kara Vanoy at 804-514-4869 if you are interested.
Shortly after our October business meeting
my PC decided to act up. I was all set to make
the announcement that Sherwood Brown was elected
as our new president when my old PC failed.
After that things just kept going downhill.
Needless to say after several trips to the Computer
Doctor I bit the bullet and between the holidays
bought a new pc. I am in the process of getting
back online, and will have information updated
soon.
Happy New Year to you all, see
you on the courts soon.

2011 Virginia State Singles
By Pat Snelgrove September 3, 2011
With the VA Singles being held in Stuarts
Draft this year, the club members worked feverishly
for the entire prior month sprucing things up.
Painting needed to be completed on our foul
lines and handicap pits, all of the walkways
needed edging, pin angles were tweaked, clay
in the courts was topped off. Our clay tends
to get really dry as summer progresses, and
by September needed a LOT of focus time watering,
turning, tamping. Then watering and turning
some more, and more and more, to get it into
premium shape. The to-do list ahead of the event
seemed endless, but the club members kicked
in and got it done, so when pitchers started
to show up Friday night, we were in top-notch
shape.
Sunday was very interesting!

Right before noontime, storm clouds were
gathering and it looked like it would start
raining. Then – KABOOM! Lightning struck
the top of the hill right across the street.
Kevin made the immediate call to “cover
the pits and get off the courts !!”. With
everyone safely in their cars or under the pavilion,
we waited while it started to sprinkle.
And then! (more
on this story, with results and lots of
photos)

Congratulations to Amy

The Fall Potluck -
Pat Snelgrove October 1, 2011
The Stuarts Draft
club’s final tournament of the year
- what a pleasant, laid back event it usually
is. Cool temps to pitch in, the pressure’s
off for the year, the pitchers just want
to relax and enjoy each other’s company
and a good dinner. We pitch for a little,
take a break, eat dinner, then pitch some
more. (Continued

Dublin Fire Cracker
August 27, 2011 Pat Snelgrove
It’s always fun to pitch in Dublin
and catch up with the players there. I get
to meet new faces from Tennessee, West Virginia,
North Carolina and even a few actual VA
pitchers that live in the far southwest
of VA. This day was no different. (continued

Our friend and fellow horseshoe pitcher Bill
Melton passed away on July 6, 2011. Bill was
an active member of the VaHPA from 1982 through
2011, and was selected as a Lifetime Member of the
Winchester Horseshoe Club on November 18, 1995.
Bill loved horseshoe pitching. He played several
tournaments during 2010, and kept pitching right
through the spring of 2011, when his illness got
the better of him. During the years, he supported
the Winchester Club in many ways, and was always
around when the club, or other pitchers, needed
assistance. His support of the Winchester Club included
holding officer positions of Statistician, 1st Vice
President and Club President for four years. His
cheerfulness and willingness to help will be sorely
missed by all of us.

Good
luck to all of our Virginia pitchers attending
the World Tournament.
From the desk of the President / Webmaster
The past year has just flown by me. When I started
writing the HsMaster Help Desk, it was originally
intended for our own Virginia members. Over the
past year, it developed into a national thing. Last
year I accepted a position on the HsMaster Council.
That activity, combined with my own business web
site, has taken a lot of my free time from the VaHPA
site. Things seem to be settling down a bit allowing
a small window to get back to work on this site.
You can help out immensely by writing a story and
sending photos of your events. Then you can keep
pestering me to get it updated. Time is precious.
The 2011 World Tournament is just around the
corner. I hope all of our members can bring home
the bacon, the medal and the fabric. On our behalf,
Chuck Duymich will be accepting an Achievement Award,
for Pat and I, from the National organization for
our involvement in the HsMaster program. We are
both very honored to receive this award.
I want to stress to all of you – your help
and involvement at the local level does make a difference.
Whether you’re a person than can take photos
at an event, or a club member that collects score
sheets at the desk., every effort every one of you
puts in has an impact. Each of you are encouraged
to write a little story to your local newspaper
or to the web to promote our sport. Every bit of
help you can give is appreciated.
Thank you all, Kevin
Toll of Time

Tom Bunting was a valued member of our
organization, and an active participant in the founding
and building of the Sleepy Hole Club. He helped
organize the membership and then the actual construction
of the court complex. He was an active member of
multiple leagues in the area, and held an officer
position in the Sleepy Hole Club for the past several
years. His cheery disposition and willingness to
pitch-in and help out will be sorely missed.
Les Singhas, one of the founding fathers
of the actual Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association
passed away in December. Les was an active member
for over 20 years, integrally involved in the establishment
of the Winchester Horseshoe Club, and was inducted
into the VaHPA Hall-of-Fame as "Organizer" in 1987.

From the Desk of the President
Happy Holidays!
To each and every one of you!
The VaHPA is closing out the past year and looking
forward to the new one. 2010 was a good year for
our Charter, despite the economic downturn that
has affected all of us. In Virginia, our over-all
tournament attendance was very good this year, and
our membership didn’t suffer drastically.
I think the VaHPA will fare even better next year
as each of us move on in our own “recovery”.
2011 will start out with a big BANG! The
Ruther Glen Club, Floyd Hix and family, are in the
process of building 12 PORTABLE COURTS. They have
scheduled 3 early events and several other events
over the course of the year, right into fall. If
you are interested in attending their Jan, Feb or
March events please contact them and let them know
you want to be there! Their contact information
and new location is on the
2011 schedule.
In Chesapeake, the city
is doing an entire revamp of City Park, closing
the horseshoe courts after the end of May. The Chesapeake
Horseshoe Club has only one early event scheduled,
so I ask each of you to attend it as it will be
their only event due to the construction. Scott
Fencil is looking forward to a great 2012 season
with some exciting new facilities surrounding them.
The Richmond Horseshoe Club is excited about
hosting the State Doubles in June, and Stuarts Draft
will be hosting the State Singles in September.
By the way, SD is kicking off the new year with
it’s annual SnowShoe Festival on January 15.
Come on over! It’s just for fun, but a real
tournament – nonsanctioned of course. Dress
Code IS: Prepare for the weather – whatever
it is, will be, and we’re all outdoors. See
you there!
Happy New Year!! See you all
on the courts this (next) year !! Kevin
