With the VA Singles being held in Stuarts Draft this year, the club members worked feverishly for the entire prior month sprucing things up. Painting needed to be completed on our foul lines and handicap pits, all of the walkways needed edging, pin angles were tweaked, clay in the courts was topped off. Our clay tends to get really dry as summer progresses, and by September needed a LOT of focus time watering, turning, tamping. Then watering and turning some more, and more and more, to get it into premium shape. The to-do list ahead of the event seemed endless, but the club members kicked in and got it done, so when pitchers started to show up Friday night, we were in top-notch shape.
I am so thankful for our club members. They pitched in and helped out for the entire event, and often times were so thorough taking care of the little things, that by the time I even thought about it, the tasks were already done. Thank you all for your hard work and help. Your efforts truly paid off, because quite a few of the visiting pitchers commented on the clay being in good shape, and how nice and trim our courts looked.
We had 73 pitchers play in the qualifying classes this year -really good participation from the entire membership. After juggling and re-printing round robin cards due to last minute cancellations, pitching started right on time – 9am – Saturday. The morning classes ran without a hitch, then we held the annual Membership meeting which ran a little bit longer than planned.
Our heartfelt congratulations go out to all the award winners this year. With a special award going to Amy Hall, who was inducted into the Virginia Hall of Fame as PITCHER. Congrats Amy, well deserved, and a great many years of hard pitching to accomplish this distinguished award.
With the meeting over, the pitchers were just getting back onto the courts when a brief rain shower made us sit and wait for almost an hour. I was beginning to get concerned about things when the shower ended, and pitchers got back in action. Somehow, during the afternoon classes, with things moving right along, we “made-up” the lag time, and closed down Saturday night right on time as if there had been no delays at all. What a relief and what a pleasant surprise.

The adult Championship classes were scheduled to pitch on Sunday. The day started out overcast, and the morning flights were completed. Congratulations to:

Right before noontime, storm clouds were gathering and it looked like it would start raining. Then – KABOOM! Lightning struck the top of the hill right across the street. Kevin made the immediate call to “cover the pits and get off the courts !!”. With everyone safely in their cars or under the pavilion, we waited while it started to sprinkle.
Then the mountain range disappeared under heavy “clouds”, then it started raining harder and a stiff breeze kicked up. Suddenly Ricky Hall ran over to Kevin pointing at the mountains – “we’ve got some serious rain comin’!! “ . I took one glance, opened the hatchback of my car, bundled the laptop, printer and electrical cords into it, slammed it shut, and jumped into the driver’s seat just as the rain hit hard. And along with that rain was a fierce wind. It drove the rain sideways – like a real hurricane in the space of a minute!! It was unbelievable. My car vibrated with the waves of rain and wind hitting it. Pitchers in the pavilion had opened their umbrellas, and lined up side-by-side to put up a wall against the wind. It was terrific! The storm lasted about 15 minutes, and dumped at least 3” of rain during the period.
As it blew over, and we surveyed the results, we knew that it would be impossible to pitch anymore that day or even Monday (Labor Day). The courts were underwater. It was decided to re-schedule the Championship rounds to September 17. The Open Men and Sr Women would play in Stuarts Draft, and the Sr Men would play in Suffolk.
On September 17, the Suffolk area was in the midst of three days of continuous rain, so the Sr Men Championship was cancelled again. It is now re-scheduled to be held on October 29, again in Suffolk.
Back in Stuarts Draft, the Sr Women battled it out in good close competition. We are pleased to recognize Donna Keefer as the 2011 Sr Women Champion.
The Open Men Championships ran with an interesting twist when (defending champion) Ronald Walker couldn’t make it to the rescheduled playoff. In a closely seeded 8 player round robin, Ricky Hall won the 2011 Men’s State Champion title with an impressive 7-0, 66.27% record. That ending stat is a full 10.85% over his entering percentage. Congratulations Ricky, good pitching !
As he was awarded his plaque, Amy commented that this was this is a 10th year anniversary for them... 10 years since Ricky won the State Champion title the last time, and since Amy won the Women’s Championship also, this is a 10th year anniversary for both of them being State Singles Champions and State Doubles Champions also.
As we slogged our way around the courts, covering up, picking up, packing up, once again I must say Thank You to the Stuarts Draft club members who stuck it out all weekend, and helped make it a memorable event.
