Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association Current News
and Updates
VaHPA News & Updates |
December 21 , 2010 Chartered by the
National Horseshoe Pitchers Association |
From the Desk of the President
Happy Holidays!
To each and every one of you!
The VaHPA is closing out the past year and looking
forward to the new one. 2010 was a good year for our
Charter, despite the economic downturn that has affected
all of us. In Virginia, our over-all tournament attendance
was very good this year, and our membership didn’t
suffer drastically. I think the VaHPA will fare even
better next year as each of us move on in our own “recovery”.
2011 will start out with a big BANG! The Ruther
Glen Club, Floyd Hix and family, are in the process
of building 12 PORTABLE COURTS. They have scheduled
3 early events and several other events over the course
of the year, right into fall. If you are interested
in attending their Jan, Feb or March events please contact
them and let them know you want to be there! Their contact
information and new location is on the
2011 schedule.
In Chesapeake, the city is
doing an entire revamp of City Park, closing the horseshoe
courts after the end of May. The Chesapeake Horseshoe
Club has only one early event scheduled, so I ask each
of you to attend it as it will be their only event due
to the construction. Scott Fencil is looking forward
to a great 2012 season with some exciting new facilities
surrounding them.
The Richmond Horseshoe Club
is excited about hosting the State Doubles in June,
and Stuarts Draft will be hosting the State Singles
in September. By the way, SD is kicking off the new
year with it’s annual SnowShoe Festival on January
15. Come on over! It’s just for fun, but a real
tournament – nonsanctioned of course. Dress Code
IS: Prepare for the weather – whatever it is,
will be, and we’re all outdoors. See you there!
Happy New Year!! See you all on the courts this
(next) year !! Kevin

Cancellation and
New Event
The "End of Summer
Lynchburg South Tournament" that was to be
held at the Moose in Lynchburg on August 14th has been
cancelled. please pass the word along to anyone you
know who expressed an interest in attending.
However , the
"Mid Summer
Fill In" is ON! for August 14th!
As President of the VaHPA, to have a sanctioned event
cancelled is always a concern, especially when it is
the last event for folks to get in their qualifiers
for the State Singles. I asked the President of the
Stuarts Draft Club if they would be willing to hold
an impromptu event filling in the slot for next weekend.
Pat consulted with the other club officers and they
agreed to host the “Mid Summer Fill In”.
It will be a sanctioned
event so that any one who needs this last qualifying
event can attend and make their requirements for the
2010 State Singles. On behalf of all the members of
the VaHPA my sincere thanks to the Stuarts Draft Horseshoe
club for filling in this need.
The entry fee will be $15.00, with a 75% payback per
class. Six man classes 1st place will receive $45, 2nd
Place $23. All classes will be 40 shoe games. Any junior
that finishes will receive a trophy after the event
recognizing their achievements. I will be the tournament
director and the President of the Stuarts Draft club,
Pat Snelgrove and Sue Guyer will be assistant directors.
Please pass the word along
The "End of Summer Lynchburg South Tournament" has moved
and changed names. Come join us! Kevin Snelgrove, President

NHPA President Stuart
Sipma is pleased to announce the appointment Rob Hagman
to the position of NHPA NatStats Director and World
Tournament Stats Room Coordinator. To read more about
Rob please visit the
NHPA
Web site. Rob expects to have the NaSTAT backlog
caught up in a few weeks.
Here in Virginia, it's business as usual.
All TD's are required to send tournament results to
our secretary/statistician Pat Snelgrove. She will make
sure NaSTAT gets updated after verifying your information
is correct. League Directors continue to send your reports
to both our secretary/statistician and Lorrain Sternburg.
Pat, our secretary/statistician will review your data
and contact you and Lorraine about any misinformation
you may have.
I know Rob Hagman is filling some
big shoes, and will be a great asset going forward.
He is young, computer smart and full of energy. Our
organization looks forward to working with him. Kevin

The lost of a V.I.P
in the NHPA By Kevin Snelgrove
The "NatStats Guy ", Glenn Jamieson, suffered
a massive heart attack on May 30th . He passed
away on the morning of June 7th. Most of you may not
know Glenn, but he knew all of you! He was responsible
for getting you your Natstat average, as well as planning,
setting up and record keeping for the World Tournament.
I have worked with Glenn for over 15 years myself. He
was always a professional, soft spoken gentleman willing
to go the extra miles to make things right.
Our thought and prayers go out
to his wife and family. Cards may be sent to their home
address which is available in Newsline and on the NHPA
website. Shirley, Glenn’s wife has requested that
all donations be made to the NHPF PO Box 1628 Penn Valley
CA 95946
Glenn work very closely with Pat
Snelgrove and our Virginia statistics. He often thanked
Pat and admired the way Virginia stayed on top of things.
Because our state statistician keeps ‘on top of
things’, If you are a TD in Virginia and have
an event coming up, our state database will be accurate
for Virginia pitchers. Pat has asked that if you, a
Virginia pitcher, cross state borders to pitch, let
her know. Keeping our state Natstats averages correct,
Pat will send current reports to the TD’s .
Stu Sipma, President of the NHPA,
assures us he is working diligently to find a replacement
for Glenn and hopes to have someone willing to take
the position in the next week or two.

2010 State Doubles By
Kevin Snelgrove
The excitement is building, Scott Fencil,
President of the Chesapeake horseshoe club is
very tired. He reports that all 12 of the courts
have been dug out, backboards repaired, reset
all the pins and most importantly put in the
finest Kentucky Blue Clay thanks to City of
Chesapeake sponsorship. Pat and I have received
several phone calls from other club members
along with our 1st vice president Sherwood Brown,
the conversations with them that these courts
are sweet! A pleasure to pitch on. I can hardly
wait to get there and inspect the courts and
play on them. See you Saturday

HORSESHOE PITCHING IS FUN month , a success!
From the desk of the President and RD.
Overall we did not gain as many new members
as I hoped for, but the contact list and excitement
is certainly growing including a new web site
sponsor. I am pleased to announce that the
Shenandoah Acres Campground, less than five
minutes away from the Stuarts Draft Complex
has signed up as a new VaHPA web sponsor. I
encourage all of you to spend a night or two
at their beautiful campground. As NHPA members
you will receive a
15% discount on your stay.
Our new sponsor came from Pat Snelgrove (Stuarts
Draft club president). She responded to an ad
in the local newspaper and thought it would
be great if her club could help out a campground
that is literally 2 miles away. She made contact
and things developed to the point that as Regional
Director she ask me to inspect the courts and
make recommendations for Horseshoe Pitching
month. The courts are a bit rustic, but
what would you expect from a campground that
has had no knowledge of official court specifications.
I suggested roping off the area with caution
tape and adding foul lines. The campground complied.
On Memorial Day weekend several Stuarts Draft
club members assisted the Shenandoah Acres Campground
with their horseshoe tournament, displayed literature
and shoes, and talked to all that gathered.
No new contacts/members for the local club,
but there where several pitchers from the Tidewater
area that were interested in the organizations
in their area. The information was passed along.
The Richmond Club held an open house and 84
people attended, some club members but mostly
new comers. Their event was held in conjunction
with “Picnic for Tree Stewards in Gilles
Creek Park “. Carl Otto admits the record
keeping could have been better and that the
club will be better prepared next year.
The Portsmouth and Suffolk Clubs jointly
teamed up with a fitness event near the
waterfront in Portsmouth. They signed up three
new members!
Our state organization got involved with the
Old Dominion Summer Classic, offering a
free entry if you brought a friend and signed
them up. We signed up two Cadets and one adult!
I look forward to discussing more ideas at our
business meeting in October. Please start thinking
now about next year so we can get these get-the-public-involved
events on the schedule.

Great day for a horseshoe tournament,
sunshine, not to hot, not to cool and
53 adults and 5 Junior participants.
As I have said before, and as I will
say again, it gives me great pleasure
to be a tournament director for such
a fine group and to the Winchester Horseshoe
Club, for all the fine members, who
assist and support me in getting the
job done. I appreciate each and everyone.

Looking for Sponsors
The Old Dominion Summer Classic is being
held May 22 in Stuarts Draft. We are
asking the members to start looking
for class sponsors for this event. Amy
Hall already covered A Class - Orvis
Co is sponsoring it. THANK YOU AMY for
thinking ahead !! Now the
rest of us need to get on the ball and
find 7 more. Remember, the $50 per class
sponsorship helps keep our State Singles
entry fees down. If you have questions
about this, just give me a call.

Joe Presho is asking
for member assistance in getting attention
to proposed courts at
Powhatan Fighting Creek Park (next to
the new Powhatan library about 1/2 mile

The Parks & Rec dept has
the proposed area all roped off, anticipating
construction of 6 courts. Depending

for 12. HOWEVER, Joe feels they’re ‘on
