What a great State Singles!

As President and Tournament Director for the Virginia State Singles it is hard to determine who I should thank first, the pitchers, the score keepers, the state council, the hosting club or Mother Nature for such a smooth event. A couple of small glitches but nothing major happened in the time table of the event. (continued on the next page) more below.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GUARDIAN ANGLES?

Thomas Banks (center) has been a backbone member of the Richmond Horseshoe Club since it beginning is so grateful for a second chance on life, thanks to the heroic efforts of a few fellow pitchers to save his life. If it was not for their efforts he would not be here! (continued on the next page)

What is harder to achieve in the NHPA organization than a perfect game?
Believe it or not, getting your 50 Year Membership is tougher than a perfect game.
By Kevin Snelgrove

Looking at the foot steps of a man that has been a big part of the Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association is amazing. A walking encyclopedia of knowledge, Floyd can recite faster than my computer can, the names, dates and results of events at the time I was barely born. How he does it just blows my mind, but it shows his devotion to a passion he loves, pitching horseshoes.

At our state singles general membership meeting I had the pleasure to present to Floyd Hix his 50 year membership patch in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. Can he get his 100 year membership? Knowing Floyd, he stands a good chance, providing he lives to be the oldest man in the world at 135 years. With today's technology it may happen. But if Floyd misses his 100 year patch one of his children might be a first. Only time will tell.

Thank you Floyd for all you have done to organize and promote the sport of pitching horseshoes..

From the Presidents Desk

Where has this summer gone? It seemed to have started late with the heat and humidity and here it is almost fall. Hurricane season is here and as of today (Sunday 8/30) it does not look like we will have to worry about one for our States Singles next week. Ninety-six pitchers signed up. The pitching schedule is pretty tight. Please attend the State meeting at noon on Saturday (rain or shine) and check in at least an hour ahead of your pitching time. If you have not heard from Pat as to when you pitch, please give her a call. Kevin

 Great Food! The Campbell family
Good Food Paul E Campbell (c) is very happy to have joined his pitching family. (Left to right) April, Jimmy, Kelly, Grandpa Paul, Dean, Dayton, Paul A.
Wow!!! When we selected July 18 for our second tournament for 2009, the big question was "What do we do about the heat?" Past experience indicated that the temperature, humidity and direct sun can be a real challenge, particularly for our more senior players. This year we got lucky. The temperature stayed in the eighties and the humidity was down

The second WOW was that we had forty five players. This is the biggest turnout (Continued on the next page)

Pennsylvania steals the X-Trails State Team Event

What started out as a normal X-Trials event turned into to an embarrassment for Virginia. Our saving grace was George" Yogi" Guyer representing our state. He signed up as an alternate for the event and became a member of the "Yankee Doodles Team" . Kathy Hash from  Pennsylvania organized two teams for this years event. Joan Elmore turns up the heat!

2009 Summer Fun
by Kevin Snelgrove
May 23 2009

Joan Elmore brought her own heat to the Summer Fun. In her first game she pitched against Charles Gray. As Charles struggled to get 18 ringers out of 32 shoes, Joan was relentless, dropping ringer after ringer on the peg ending the game in Perfection. The first game set the tone of her day, one by one (continued on the next page)

The Draft Doubles
May 9, 2009
by Kevin Snelgrove

With a fifty- fifty chance of rain we held our breath preparing this morning. At nine o’clock a little sprinkle, but to the west blue skies, after that the rains held off. However, being in the “Draft”, Mother Nature upheld her reputation. It was breezy all day, but by midafternoon turned down right gusty – at one point, our coffee maker flew right off the table, a trash can went over and paperwork blew all over the place. Being a woman I was very glad to see 3 of the 6 classes won by women. Go ladies.
Guys get your woman interested, it can be a very good time to spend time enjoying the sport as a couple. I know when Talmage first asked me to join him, I was hesitate because I was then only 1 of 2 women in the club. But we enjoy sharing this time together doing something we both have come to love doing. (Continued with results and photos)

Special thanks to Bobby Vickers, the computer guy, who kept things going smoothly from 9 am to 9 PM, to my wife, Mary Ellen, who did registration and all the things I forgot to do, to Kammy Luck for helping Bobby get everyone into the computer and started, and to those who volunteered and kept score. Snowshoe Trophies

2009 Snow Shoe Festival
By Pat Snelgrove

What a difference the temperature makes when you think about horseshoe pitching! If it’s too hot, pitchers think twice, and attendance suffers. Here in Virginia, we rarely have the opportunity to even think about what happens if it’s too cold.

With the Snow Shoe Festival, we take our chances, and over the past couple years, we have had quite a range. The last two years, we’ve been blessed with something around 50. The year before mid-thirties. This year took the cake! Biting, freezing temps - it was 4 degrees when we got up this morning, and by the time we headed to the courts had only reached 10. Would we have any pitchers at all? (continued on the next page)

The 2009 application forms have been mailed and are also posted on the web site. The Current Schedule is Revision 4. .

From the Presidents Desk

It won’t be long now before we are back on the courts for the new season. With the tightening economy, I’m sure you’re all feeling the effects in someway, and most likely the clubs hosting events will feel it also. This is going to be a challenging year for tournament attendance. Try carpooling with other pitchers to help with travel expenses.

By now, you’ve all received information about the VaHPA’s fund raiser for this year -based upon the Pick 3 raffle, you can purchase a ticket with your membership application or from the “local sales people” that volunteered to help distribute and sell the tickets. Keep in mind, the ticket sales and winnings are not restricted to horseshoe pitchers. Anyone can buy a ticket, and anyone can win! So why not buy a couple extra to hand out for father’s day or birthday gifts?

The Virginia State sponsored events this year: Old Dominion Summer Classic, will be held in Suffolk, hosted by the Portsmouth Horseshoe Club. The State Doubles will be in Winchester, and the State Singles will be in Stuarts Draft. We’re hoping all of the VaHPA members will attend these events.

The World Tournament will be held in Springfield Illinois this year, from July 27 through August 8. If you plan on going, make sure you get your pre-qualifying tournaments played before May 9. Adults need to have at least 4 sanctioned events listed in NaStats, and Juniors need 1 . The results of your qualifiers must be POSTED on NaStats before May 13, so don’t wait until the last minute!!.

See you on the courts soon, Kevin
