Sept 19, 2009 in Kingsport, Tn. at the Rock Springs Horseshoe Courts. Attending were pitchers from; Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama. The weatherman called for rain but it held off long enough to play. You could not asked for better weather. We enjoyed great competition and sportsmanship through out the tournament. If you missed it, you missed a good time! </p> <hr> <p align="center">By Kevin Snelgrove</p> <p>Traveling from north to south across Virginia is every bit of 321 miles if you are on I-81. Did you know Kingsport Tennessee, home to the Grady Whaley Horseshoe pitching tournament is only another 20 miles south. For Pat and I, it was a short four hour ride, much like going to the Chesapeake and Suffolk area. Only a 240 mile ride! Traffic was not that bad but the rain going through Christiansburg certain slowed us down. The rain was unbelievable, we could barely see 100 feet in front of us. </p> <p>For several years we have been trying to attend this event, but for some reason we were also busy with events here in Virginia. We made it this year! </p> <p>Arriving early evening on Friday we settled into the hotel, went over to the courts to see what was going on. Many pitchers where there warming up, when we ask what is a good place to eat, Danny Neely a club member piped up and took us to a local Texas Steak house. What a feast we had! We left stuffed! </p> <p>Saturday morning we did not have to be there early so Pat and I had breakfast at the Perkins Restaurant in front of the hotel. We have eaten at several Perkins before, but this time was different. Again we left stuffed! We still had to pitch! They like to feed you in Tennessee! </p> <p>At the courts we were greeted by many individuals, a lot of them we had never met. After signing in, I was put to work answering questions about HsMaster. With a few quick adjustments they stayed right on track starting the event on time. </p> <p>Charlie Helton and Harry Bastedo had it under control, I left to go to my assigned court. I still had not pitched a practice round. My opponent was waiting on me. He turned the courts and was ready to go. I said  Let s do it Flipped the shoe and off we went! </p> <p>Picking up my first shoe I was amazed at the clay just how soft it was. After pitching a few rounds I notice the clay did not clump up and spill over into the runway. Talking with Pat in between rounds she noticed the same thing. I had one shoe that totally got lost, like pitching on sand. It buried itself in the clay I could not find it. A few pokes with my pick up stick, I got a point! </p> <p>Twenty four courts all of them in the same condition. Amazed, we asked questions. The clay came from Louisville , Kentucky. I had thought the clay at the World in York Pa was the best, but this clay beat it hands down two fold. I was told the clay is part of the foundation of many skyscrapers across the county to strengthen the concrete. Hard to believe something that is that soft is used in skyscrapers. I will pursue the leads we got ! Amazing clay! </p> <p>I look forward to returning Kingsport to explore.
