| Spectacular weather greeted the Sweet
Dreams 5K race and horseshoe pitching events. Perhaps Eric Prichett
our local NBC29 weatherman had a bit of influence over Mother
Nature and blessed this day with great weather. A bit hot and
humid perhaps but the expected thunderstorms held off until
after the whole Sweet Dreams event ended at 5:00 pm.
Eric finished second this year in the 5K event running 19:55,
Daniel Alonzo finished 1st with an 18.02. It was a record breaking
year for running times. It was a record breaking event all the
way around - attendance this year surprised even the organizer
of the race Sony Cubbage, with 125 participants. This race is
growing every year!
The same thing happened with the horseshoe event - with an
unexpected turnout of more than 50 people, some pitchers were
turned away. Planning for a maximum of 28 pitchers, we weren’t
prepared for that turnout! My apologies if you were part of
the people turned away. Next year we will be better prepared.
Discussions are already underway to improve the registration
process, possibly hold a Friday night horseshoe event with the
winners coming back on Saturday for the Championship rounds
or changing the format altogether.
Reading the Staunton Daily News Leader on Sunday, Kathy McQuain,
Augusta County’s event coordinator, said the increased participation
was felt throughout the entire Sweet Dreams event. According
to her records, the event visitors/participants went over 10,000
! The MAX since the event started six years ago. The Stuarts
Draft Park was full of sponsors, crafters, food booths, rides
and games for the children.
Sincere thanks to the many sponsors that make the event free
for all. It was a lot of fun, come back and see us next year!
