2009 X Trials There is no precedence in the history of the X-Trials that an out of state
team has won this event. This year, teams from Pennsylvania won both first &
second places! Kathy Hash worked hard to make two teams, and we were tickled
pink to host “3 Yankees & a Reb” and the “Yankee Doodles”. Setting up, the
Yankee Doodles were short one player.
Yogi Guyer had signed up as an alternate to pitch the event and filled in the
fourth slot. Virginia’s saving grace!
Our defending champions, the Richmond Sharp Shoeters, led by Joe Presho
struggled with their wins and losses all day. Seeded number one, they lost
critical games which put them into third place. After a long day of pitching,
made of a 6 man round robin with only 20 shoes per game, two teams ended in a
tie for first place, forcing a playoff. Both of those teams were from
Pennsylvania!
The playoff round ended with both teams STILL tied. Both had won 2 and lost 2
in that round. Exhausted, eight competitors faced each other again! Another
precedence! Double overtime! This time around, the Yankee Doodles dominated,
winning 3 out of the 4 games, to take home the title. 2009 X-Trials Champions!
As we all cooled off after the event, the PA pitchers told us “we’ll be back
to defend our title next year”. And the Stuarts Draft club will be glad to have
them back.
What an enjoyable day. The team format makes for a really interesting
competitive competition, with team captains using strategy to set up the
opponents for each game.
Looking forward to next year already, hope to see you
here!
