the Halls Richmond area members swept all the classes at the Virginia State Doubles event held this past weekend at the pitching complex in Stuarts Draft. Twenty five teams competed for the prestigious State Double Champion and State Class Champion titles. Twelve years is a long time, and the team of Rick and Amy Hall have been the Virginia State Doubles Champions all that time. After knocking off the rest of the competition in A class, they faced off undefeated with the team of Richard Brown and Herman Harper, both from Richmond. Twenty eight shoes into the game (40 point limit) the Halls stood 38 to 34. Herman was hot throwing and gained another three points, 38 to 37 the Halls favor. Richard knew the victory was close. He fired down two ringers. Amy took a deep breath, focused and covered Richard’s shoes – “four dead”. Amy encouraged Ricky and he responded“…no pressure..”. Ricky’s first pitch glanced the peg, the second shoe as always followed the first – missing the ringer but landing for a point. Herman could smell, feel and taste the victory, wasted little time pitching. Leaving his hand he knew he had a ringer One ringer ends a dynasty, two ringers “Icing on the Cake!” As he threw up his hands in jubilation, Amy said “It’s been a long twelve years, congratulations”. As one dynasty ends, another one begins. We look forward to the competition trying to take the title “VIRGINIA STATE DOUBLE CHAMPIONS” from Richard & Herman next year. The B class title of State Class Champions was secured by teammates Hope and Joe Presho also from the Richmond Horseshoe Club. They went 6 wins and 1 loss to secure the 1st place position. Their only loss was to club mates Bobby Spencer and Anthony Brown, the son of the newly crowned Richard Brown. 2nd place went to Randy Rickard, Spotsylvania and Gail Walker from Mineral. Floyd and Charlene Hix (father and daughter) from Ruther Glenn took the State C Class title with a 5 and 1 record. 2nd place went to a father and son team – Paul & Dayton Campbell (7 years old) - from Mineral. Dayton will be representing Virginia at the World Tournament in York, PA as the second seed in the Cadet Division on July 11&12. In D Class John Dandridge and Thomas Banks from the Richmond Horseshoe Club found themselves in a playoff for 1st place with a Mary and Gene Dunivan from the Stuarts Draft Club. Dandridge and Banks won the playoff and the title of Class Champions. For this year, Richmond is no doubt the horseshoe pitching capital of Virginia Kevin 2008 Doubles Championship Passes On!
