The Virginia State Singles With beautiful weather forecast for the weekend, we looked forward to the event. Excitement was in the air when we arrived early Saturday, pitchers already on the courts warming up, and cars pulling into the parking lot right behind us! THIS is the STATE SINGLES !! As always, the Winchester facility makes a perfect place to hold such an event. With 24 courts to spread out on, the pitchers can warm up at their ease. And the club members do an excellent job at making sure everything is in order. Clay is in prime condition. Chairs and scoreboards are setup before they are needed, concessions already available, pencils already sharpened. All of these little things that the hosting club takes care of are what helps make the State Singles a success. The VaHPA thanks the Winchester Club for their support and for hosting this year. GREAT JOB THANK YOU!! With the awards set up on the tables, the pitchers admired the display. Chatter in the pavilion echoed the camaraderie and the underlying competition on the courts about who might win which award. Class lineups posted on the board were evaluated by the pitchers, checking what their class highs and lows would be. After a brief struggle with the sound system, the pitchers were called in, it was time to start the event. Seventy seven had signed up for the qualifying classes. After a few no-shows, we had 73 compete. And what a good time it was! Hearl Kelly, defending state Champion for the Open Men 40 division was challenged seriously in the qualifying rounds by his competition. Ronnie Walker has always gnawed at the big dog’s sleeve, never quite bringing him down, and did so again this time around – never quite bringing him down. Hearl remains the big dog. ((and who the heck is this newcomer Michael Pettit that qualified for 3rd place going into the championships?)) As the qualifying round commenced, Hearl had to buckle down hard. He was seeded in 1st place, Ronnie in 2nd. The way things work in a round robin, the first and second place seeds play each other last. At the start of that game, both were tied with 6-0. (Remember, the qualifying rounds are 40 shoe games.) At 10 shoes, the score stood in Ronnie’s favor 15-6. At 20 shoes, the score stood in Ronnie’s favor 21-13. Then Ronnie got stuck. Or Hearl held him. Whichever way you want to look at it, for the next 14 shoes, Ronnie’s score didn’t budge, while Hearl poured it on. Hearl tied the score 21-21 at 30 shoes, and then just kept laying down ringer after ringer. Ronnie managed another single point at shoe 34, but that’s where he stopped. Hearl held him at 22 points running to the end with a final score of 33!! GREAT pitching Hearl, keep it up Ronnie!! What a game to watch!! In B class qualifying rounds, Micheal Pettit who was seeded 6th going in, ended up in first place going out with a 6-1 record. His only loss of the day was given to him by Randall Weakley in round 3 when Pettit rang up a 55% and Randall was hot with a 60%. Michael did qualify for the Championship rounds in 3rd place with an overall percentage in the qualifiers 58.57% - a full 14.34 over his entering stat. Keep an eye out for Michael, he’s just young enough, with just enough energy and enthusiasm, that he might cause havoc in the upper ranks!! David Cowan Jr, seeded as #1 in C Class, met his match in Matthew Taylor who was seeded #2 going in. David ended up in first place with 43.57%, 5.5/1.5, but Matthew had the higher percentage at 44.64% and took third place. Can you feel a rubber match coming up? Danny Ray Hughes, seeded #8 going in, took 2nd place with 40% - 8.66 over his entering stat. The tightest seeding was in Class D, with only 2.66% from top to bottom. Each game was almost straight up for the contestants, and what close matches there were! In the round where James vs. James - James Allen vs. James Danner – it was one of those games you wish didn’t have a shoe limit. Allen lead the way, score 9-8 at shoe 14. Still Allen’s favor at shoe 28, 17-12. Then Danner got his steam and started really catching up. When the shoes ran out at the end of the game it was Allen 26, Danner 23. Good match, and good pitching from both. That game must have gotten Danner fired up, because his next match was just as close. Facing Kevin Foster, the score tied at shoe 10 -10/10. Tied again at shoe 20 – 14/14. Tied again at shoe 28 – 18/18. Finished at shoe 40 – 25/23 to Danner. In that same class, a close game by Randy Hughes and Kevin Foster. Score stood 7-6 in favor of Foster at shoe 10. Then Foster scored to 16. He was stuck cold. Hughes kept on coming until at shoe20, score was 17-16. Hughe’s favor. Then the lead shifted again. At shoe 32, it was 27-17 Foster’s favor. Within the next 8 shoes, Hughes pulled it off, winning the game 28-27 !! Great pitching!! In E Class, the top place finishers had a ladder playoff and didn’t know it, because their games took place in round 3 and 4 out of the seven. It was Bill Hartless vs. Chuck Duymich. Hartless led the whole game until he got stuck at 34 shoes with the score 30-25 his favor. Chuck kept focused, winning the game 34-30 !! What a finish !! In another upset round, it was Hartless vs. Vince Moore. Scores stood 19-2 Hartless at shoe 16. 20-8 at shoe 24. 21-14 at shoe 30. 21-20 at shoe 34. 22-23 at shoe 38. And then on the last throw, Hartless took the game – 26-23 !! What a finish!! What a turnaround!! As the class ended, Vince Moore took 1st place, Bill 2nd, Chuck 3rd – tied by W/L – awarded by percentage. F Class was the only one of the day to end with a playoff. Harland Soussis, Kirk Adams and Tom Bunting were all tied with 6-1 at the end of the rounds. In the ladder playoff, Adams sat out while Soussis and Bunting battled. That round left Adams competing against Bunting. And as the dust settled, it was Adams 1st, Bunting 2nd, Soussis 3rd. Being in the lowest seeded class is no less exciting. Each competitor is pitted against opponents of equal caliber. In G Class 6th round, Joseph Orndoff faced off against John Dandridge. At shoe 28, the score stood 19-8 Orndorff’s favor. By shoe 36, Dandridge had tied the score 19-19, and kept on comin’- he ended the game 22-19!! Great pitching both!! In the 7th round, we saw Ken Sorrell vs. Thomas Banks. The score was tied at shoe 38 - 16/16. Sorrell scored a ringer that Banks didn’t cover, winning the game. The class ended with Dandridge in 1st, Banks 2nd, Orndorff 3rd. At the same time the 40 foot class excitement was unfolding, the 30 foot mixed classes were also taking place. All of the 30 foot players were mixed – Elders, Women, Juniors, Cadets. It was our disappointment this year that we had a single Junior Boy, single Junior Girl and a single Junior Cadet. HOWEVER, those Juniors did themselves proud. Dayton Campbell, Junior Cadet, held his own, blowing out his (D) class 5-0. Seeded #5 going in, this young man is only 7 years old and ended his qualifying rounds with a 41.88% !! He must have inspired other pitchers, because both Carrie Flowers and Diane Barb scored well above their entering stats – Diane ended the day with a 35.63% - 13.71% over her entering stat. She said “ I don’t know who was in my shoes pitching all those ringers, but it sure felt good! “ In 30 E Class, Mary Dunivan dominated, her only loss of the day dished out by Junior Boy David McDowell, - who was top seed going in. Mary came out 1st, David 2nd, Delisa Sturtz 3rd. Gail Walker, seeded top in 30 C Class took it by storm, winning all of her games. Betty Weakley came in 2nd, and 3rd place was awarded to Donald Parks by percentage. The 30 A pitchers and 30 B pitchers were pitted against each other but awarded separately. Three competed in each class. Amy Hall won the 30-A with 5-0 , Carl Otto won the B with 5-0. In the Championship Rounds , our three Juniors competed against each other. David McDowell was awarded Junior Boy Champion, Elizabeth Vannoy was awarded Junior Girl Champion, and Dayton Campbell went home proudly bearing the title of Junior Cadet Champion. <<We have more Junior pitchers as members in the VaHPA, and encourage all clubs to enroll their juniors in the State Singles….>>In the Women’s Division Championships, the top six were seeded in. Amy Hall, defending title holder, won all her games, earning the honor for another year. Gail Walker was having a great time during the event – she came in second place. The highlight of the class was Gail’s game against Renee Cowan. Just coming out of her game against Amy, where she managed to score 19 points, Gail was just hot. Although Renee started out in the lead, Gail tied the score at 15-15 and just kept laying down ringers. Renee never had a chance after 20 shoes. Gail won 41-21 after only 42 shoes. Does she have her eyes on the top seed in the near future? Don Masters, seeded 3rd, gave his competitors a run for the title in the Elder’s Division Championship class. He ran close games against the top two seeds, losing to both, but making them know he was a player to be reckoned with. In the 3rd round game against Carl Otto, Don led all the way from the gate. By shoe 26, the score was 27-21 Don’s favor. Then the lead switched. At shoe 32, Otto took the lead 28-27. Then the lead switched again, Don’s favor all the way to shoe 42. Otto’s lead 38-35. Don tied on the next throw, 38-38. They both knew this was “it”. Carl threw a double, Don only covered one. Carl won the game 41-38. What a finish it was !! great pitching !! Don’s follow up game in the 4th round was no less exciting. Pitted against Dewey Storms, who had won all his games until now, Don started in the lead, but got stuck for ten shoes at 14. Dewey caught up and passed him 17-14 at shoe 30. Don mustered and regained the lead 23-21. Dewey got to 30 points by shoe 42, then it took him another 22 shoes to win the game. Don matched him point for point, ringer for ringer. Score creeping slowly, four deads falling. At shoe 64, Dewey finally went out with 41-34 !! Great game !! The rounds ended with the top three seeds taking the top three places. Dewey is honored to have the title Elders Division Champion. Carl Otto came in 2nd, and Don in 3rd. The Senior Men’s Division Championship class was an upset when the top seed going in earned 4th place coming out. Ray Barb played just as well as could be, but it’s your wins and losses that earn your ranking, and his luck just didn’t support him during these games. Ray won his first game, but got started slowly in the 2nd one against Ronnie Reeves. Ronnie showed no mercy, jumping to a big lead 30-16 by shoe 46. Ray caught his wind about then and turned on the steam. By shoe 58, he had brought the score to 38-34 still Reeve’s favor. Then Ronnie scored and Jim didn’t cover. Good stamina Ronnie, even though a disappointment for Ray. Ray’s percentage for the game was 38.33, Ronnie’s was 36.67. Charlie Edmonds got tromped royally by Wayne Sturtz in round two, losing 1-44. That round must have fired him up, because in the next game against Tom Bunting, he stomped Bunting 40-4, and went on to win his final game against Ray Barb 40-30 . Great throwing Charlie !! Wayne Sturtz, first time competitor in this division, earned the title Senior Men’s Division Champion. Ronnie Reeves came in 2nd and Charles Edmonds in 3rd. AND in the 40 foot Open Men’s Division Championship rounds, what games there were!! In the 1st round, Charlie Walker vs. Edward Thompson saw the score tied 19-19 at shoe 24. Charlie got stuck, Edward zoomed ahead until at shoe 42, the score was 38-26 Edward’s favor. Then Edward got stuck. Charlie tucked in, buckled down and turned on both burners, held Edward at 38 to win the game 42-38 at shoe 52!! What a run to the finish!! Then in the 3rd round, with Jessie Johnson vs. Hearl Kelly… Jessie held the lead all the way to shoe 40, where he stalled with the score 31-22. Hearl threw consistent ringers while Jessie fell apart around shoe 48, score 31-29. Hearl closed the game at 56 shoes with a score of 42-34. We’ve all gotten “stuck” at some time or other in our pitching, and can understand how frustrating that game must have been for Jessie. And the same thing happened to Ricky Hall in round four. Score tied 16-16 at shoe 26, then he stalled. Michael Pettit turned on both burners ringing up 80% in the final ten shoes to close the game 41-16. WOW Michael !! Way to go!! In the fifth round, Hearl came the closest to a loss than he did for the whole event. Facing off against newcomer Michael Pettit, it was ringer cancellation after ringer cancellation. Pettit gained the lead by shoe 40, 27-16. Then Hearl came back. By shoe 48, the score was 28 to Hearl, 27 to Michael. By shoe 62, the score was 38 Hearl, 36 Michael. It was anyone’s game. Hearl landed a ringer, Michael didn’t cover, it was over. 41-36 to Hearl. What a game!! Watch out for Michael, he’s comin’ after the title one of these days!! The fourth round against Jessie Johnson must have fired up Edward Thompson (who ended with 42-16, 63.04%), because in the fifth round he played against Ronnie Walker, and blew OUT the game, ending with 41-23 and a 75.93%! Ronnie ended that game with his high of the day – 64.81%. We all know Edward’s capable of this kind of pitching, but don’t always see it – great pitching Ed!! And in the following round (6th), Edward faced off against Hearl. This ended up being the longest game of the day – finishing with 72 shoes. Both players dog tired? Hearl coming off his game with Michael, Ed coming off his game against Ronnie ? The game went along. Hearl gets a ringer, Ed gets a ringer. Hearl scores points, Ed scores points. The lead shifted back and forth until at shoe 42 with four dead in the pit, the score stood at 21-20 Hearl’s favor. Ed got stuck, gaining just six points in the next twenty-two shoes, while Hearl kept gaining. By shoe 64, the score stood 39-29. Hearl ended the game 42-31 at shoe 72. What a game!! The final match, round seven, pitted seed #3 Michael Pettit (58.57%) against seed #4 Edward Thompson (53.21%), and seed #1 Ronnie Walker (70.71%) against defending Champ seed #2 Hearl Kelly (66.79%). In the Pettit/Thompson game, Michael led 21-4 at shoe 18, where he stalled out. For the next 20 shoes, he was stuck while Edward came on. The score tied at shoe 38, 24-24. And that’s where Michael just couldn’t keep up. Edward took the lead, kept the lead and ended the game 42-31 at shoe 56. In the Walker/Kelly game, Hearl dominated from the start. He’d already won all of his games, this was the final round. Ronnie came close to tying the score early in the game, but Hearl stayed well in the lead from then on. Congratulations Hearl for defending your title, and CONGRATS to our 2008 MEN’S OPEN 40 FOOT CHAMPION!! Looking forward to the competition next year. Whew! Pat
