Mountain View Singles

It’s the middle of the hottest part of the summer, and the weather forecast for thunderstorms loomed. First phone call was at 10pm the night before, asking if the tournament was going to be held. “Yes, we’re planning on it”. Then this morning, 7am, another caller from north of us – ‘we’ve had 2” of rain since 3:30 this morning, are you still holding this? ’ (Here in Stuart Draft, we were praying for rain. Nothing more than a few sprinkles for the past several weeks.) “Yes. We’re planning on holding the tournament, come on down. “

It was pleasantly cool to start the day, and we had 25 pitchers sign up. What a range of entering percentages, it was a surprise! Top heavy and bottom heavy. Our “normal” middle range players were not in abundance this day. A few heavy sprinkles, enough concern to cover the courts, drove the warm-ups off the courts for ½ hour, but did not cause a delay of start.

All day, cloud cover was present, and the constant breeze kept the pitchers cooled off. I think the temp did actually hit mid 90’s , but until the very end of the day you would not have known it.

In D Class, Chris Moore won all his games, with a close finish over Harland Soussis. That game was the decision making point. If Harland won, it would have forced a three way play-off. The game was decided in the last shoes tossed, when Chris got a ringer that Harland didn’t cover. Chris took first, Mary Dunivan 2nd, Harland 3rd.

Bill Hartless and Bobbie Johnson were tied for 1st place in C Class with 4-1, but instead of a play-off game decided to settle by percentage. The heat had gotten to both of them, but an amicable decision was made. Bill took 1st, Bobby 2nd and Yogi Guyer 3rd.

Raymond Deal, who initially came to watch, but couldn’t resist signing up took 1st place in B Class, 5-0. He faced some tough competition, especially from Mike Pettit, who came in 2nd. Raymond’s overall for the day was 39.49, Pettit’s was 46.09 – goes to show, it’s your W/L record that decides these events.

A Class was the only one that had a playoff for 1st place. Amy Hall had 1 loss (given by Buck Johnson) and Hearl Kelly was undefeated when they pitched each other. Amy beat Hearl, forcing the playoff with both tied 6-1 after 76 shoes.

The playoff was really intense, Hearl caught Amy early on with a 7 point lead and only got concerned when the score almost tied at shoe 28, 13-12. Amy got stuck at 12, and Hearl kept getting it on. He maintained the lead all the way through, and after exactly another 76 shoes, won the game. Great pitching both! What a playoff!

Thanks go to the club members that arrived early to get things set up, and stayed late to close down. Membership support and preparation is much appreciated. And Kevin, the cook for the day, served up sausage with fried peppers&onions, which was well received. Thanks to all the pitchers who braved the weather, and to the members that helped out.
