The Richmond Open

The Richmond Horseshoe Pitchers Club hosted the Richmond Open tournament on Saturday, April 19, 2008 in Gillies Creek Park, Richmond, VA.

The weather was ideal. High temperature about 80, low humidity, slight breeze and moderate sun.

28 Contestants competed in 4 groups of 7,  each group playing 8 man rotation with a bye on three courts. The buy person became one of the scorers for that match. The top group had two separate groups: one group of two with a percent of 53% or better, the remaining 5 players in that group all 39% or lower. This made for some interesting matches.

The tournament championship was won by Herman Harper. He and Richard Brown met in the final game with 5-0 records. In the sixth game, Harper beat Brown by 1 point. Several of the bottom five players gave both Harper and Brown a good match.

In the next group of 5 players, playing against Harper and Brown, Ronnie Reeves won 1st with a 4W-2L record and 41.54%. Joe Presho was 2nd with a 2W-4L record and 41.53%. He beat his wife Hope Presho with a 2W-4L record and 32.39%. Every ringer obviously is important and consistency is the key.

B Class was won by Marvin Chesson with a 5W-1L record (38.54%). 2nd place went to a new player, Anthony Brown with 4W-2L record (38.93%). 3rd Place went to another new player, Vince Moore with a 4W-2L record (31.92%).

C Class was won by Bobby Spencer with a perfect 6W-0L record (42.31%). 2nd place went to Mathew Taylor 4W-2L (38.69%) and 3rd place went to Cyril Coleman 4W-2L (31.25%). Proof again that ringer percentage is important. Never pass up the opportunity make another ringer.

D Class was won by Deforest Mapp in a playoff over Stanley Friend. Both ended regular competition with 5W-1L records. Third place went to David Crockett, Jr. with 4W-2L (19.33%).

Once again, Ivan Morton and family treated all in attendance to breakfast and lunch food, FREE OF CHARGE. Who could ask for more?

The next Richmond Club Tournament will be Saturday, July 19, 2008. Registration prior to 10 am.  Bring you sun hat, sun screen and water and join in the fun. We do not know about the food. You will have to come and find out for yourself if you have missed another opportunity to have a treat.
