Spring has sprung and it's time for the Spring Fling. Mentally we were ready to get the season started, physically we weren't all there. Tony Webb was at the local hospital recuperating from a cancer operation, Td Scott Fencil had a work arrangement and couldn't be there till 11:00, one court out of commission. So with the help of other club Presidents, TD'S and the State Pres., V.P., and the State Secretary, as you can see this was truly a joint effort, which says a lot for the brotherhood of the horseshoe players, the tournament started. Once we were able to get the tournament underway everybody had a good time. The concession business was as strong as ever with the hot dogs leading the way. We had 29 players participating with 9 people sitting this one out, at the event and learning the computer program and keeping score for the matches. This was as strong a showing for the spring event for Chesapeake. With the combined effort we finished minutes before the rain came. Our Club decided to give out Gift cards instead of trophies this spring
. I hope it was money well spent. Chesapeake Club pulls together The Spring Fling was a challenge in many ways. Yes, Mother Nature played a big part in the event as a cold front full with thunderstorms approached. The morning was very comfortable temps in the 70’ties, but the warnings on the TV did not look good at all for the afternoon through evening. Just prior to the event, the TD and Club President, Tony Webb had undergone surgery and was still in the hospital. Scott Fencil stepped up as TD, but ended up with a mandatory work assignment for that very morning, and couldn’t arrive until around 11. Kirk Adams then took on the task of getting the event up and running. On top of that confusion, the club decided to start using the NHPA score sheets, a challenge all by itself. With a phone call a few days ahead of the event, Scott asked for assistance, and Pat & I agreed to give them a hand. What we did not know until we arrived was that one of their twelve courts was out of service for the day. Another challenge!. As people started showing up, the numbers climbed to the point of making a second flight. With Mother Nature threatening, that was out of the question. Rain storms would arrive around 3 in the afternoon. 31 people signed up to pitch, with another six that could have entered but attended just to help out. At the cut off time, the question was, how do we get 31 pitchers on 11 courts in one flight? We all have to thank Paul Stewart President of the NHPA for tip he recently shared with me - using HsMaster, putting an 8 man class on three courts. It worked SLICK !! One last hurdle faced us. Out of 4 classes, one (A Class) had a 22% spread. Consulting with Kirk and the club members present, the decision was made to handicap that class, “Let’s get it done!” in one flight. They all knew the area, watched the radar on TV, followed it on their cell phones, and had no doubt that rain was coming mid-afternoon. Kirk made opening announcements, welcomed every one and explained the circumstances of the day. Then he then turned it over to me to explain the round robins and the new score sheets. As the pitchers approached the courts, A Class was in a tizzy. The high seed and the low seed pitched a fit and left the courts. With the high and low seed out it still left a 15% spread. After a brief consultation with Kirk & the members, the decision was leave the class handicapped. Go and Pitch! Tough it out! Seeing how things rolled out, and who won and lost, after the event, I called other RDs and discussed the handicap process. What I found was that the percentage I set (95%) was incorrect – we should have used something like 83%. Going forward, this is a lesson well learned and not to be forgotten. My hat goes off to Horace Phillips and Jerry Colyer for sticking it out and pitching under the handicap. It was quite a day. We finished up around 3pm and were packing up the cars as the first rain drops started to fall. I’d like to extend a heart felt round of thanks to the club members and all the others that helped out – they really pulled together and made the event a success. You all did a great job. Kevin
