The Fall Finals

An evening tournament to escape the worst of the September heat was the idea that surfaced for Stuarts Draft’s 2006 Fall Finals event. Having had success in 2006, we decided to repeat in 2007 - start the event in the late afternoon, and run it until it’s done. Although the club offered the “normal” hotdogs and hamburgers this year, we invited the pitchers to bring a dish and make the food offerings a potluck. It was a wonderful experience. Everyone participated, and as these things go, we had more food than all of the pitchers and spectators could possibly consume!! Thirty two pitchers participated, and many of them brought family and friends along. In the pavilion, it was a very relaxed end-of-season event. That relaxed atmosphere only extended so far however. On the courts, the competition was friendly but sometimes intense. It was great to welcome back WV pitchers Greg Dotson and Wayne Burdette. They were getting a bit rusty at the end of the year, and decided to pay a visit to Stuart Draft. Greg took A Class, after dishing out a loss to our very own Edward Thompson who had won all his games until that one. Greg scored 40 to Edward’s 28 points, finishing the game 65% to 59%. It was a great game to watch! Good pitching guys! Then in B Class, Wayne Burdette took the honors with 6-0. Second place winner Granville Weakley tried his best, but his only loss of the day was to Wayne. Their game finished 42-38 in Wayne’s favor. What a close came and great competition. We look forward to seeing them play against each other again sometime next year. The C Class first place finish was won by Roger Morris, new Stuarts Draft club member. His only loss of the day given to him by his friend Greg Walton, also a new SD club member. Since their match was the first game of the round robin, maybe Roger wasn’t fully warmed up? Or maybe that game lit his fuse? Roger didn’t lose another game all day, finishing with a 4-1 record and a 31.53% overall. Greg came in 2nd place, by percentage (30.67%), being tied 3-2 with John Ham, who came in 3rd place (27.43). In D Class, we were happy to Diane Barb (Winchester) sign up. She took 1st place in the class with a 5-0, ending the day with 24.41 overall. That was not the highest average for the class though – Earl Waggy ended his play with a 26.72% overall. Earl was tied for w/l with Mike Williams 3-2, but took to the place by percentage. Mike had 24.17 for the day. It was good competition for everyone in the class, and the pitchers walked off the courts shaking hands and slapping shoulders, reliving those close plays. Shawn Doffermire won E Class with a 5-1 record, his only loss of the day dished out by Linda Lepper from Maryland. Linda can really get hot when she’s in her rhythm, and considering that she arrived late and walked directly out on the courts to pitcher with no warm ups, she pitched really well. At the end of 5 rounds, she had won one game against Shawn, and Shawn had won one against her. They were tied and had to playoff for the first place position. It was a good tight game and with a 50 shoe limit, ended 29/27 Shawn’s favor. Great game both!! Going into 2008, the Stuarts Draft club decided that the potluck dinner was well received by the pitchers, but needs a ‘dinner break’. Next year we will start the event an hour earlier to allow an extra hour for a dinner break around 6pm. Looking forward to the camaraderie and good times next year.
