2006 State Singles Review by Pat Snelgrove Hurricane season came a little early in Virginia this year, with the advent
of Ernesto on Labor Day weekend. On Wednesday, the VaHPA decided not to take the
chance of being washed out, and postponed the event for two weeks. As things
turned out, it was a good decision. Downpours in Winchester Wednesday and
Thursday put the courts under water, even though the club had taken all
precautions to cover the courts and try to keep them dry.

After a year or more of planning, the Let Um Ring
gang is making great progress. These photos where taken November 4th
show the first four courts setting up. The club hopes to have all 12
courts in the ground for use next summer.

The 40th Raymond Frye Memorial Horseshoe Tournament ABSOLUTE FOCUS!
The 40th
Raymond Frye Memorial Tournament Friday, the day before, 9:30 am I checked the courts, absolutely perfect! The rains early week have provided just enough moisture. I live 12 miles north of the courts, a storm passes early afternoon to the south, and I remember hoping that it’s not raining at the courts. It did, arriving early Saturday morning and with the help of Club volunteers, enough courts were dried out (continued on the next page) Getting into A Class By Kevin Snelgrove In all of the tournaments I have attended, my camera is not far away. Much like pitching horseshoes “You have good days and bad days” my camera, my eye and my photographs are alike in that I have good and bad photos. With the running of the 40th Frye, my eye was keen and intune with (continued on the next page)-------------- PS. Bobby Burke did a wonderful job running his first tournament. He has been around pitching for a long time watching his wife pitch. He has learned a lot from just being there and observing things. Bobby passed the HsMaster Training program, and with his observations and skills set up the event, he showed his knowledge, running the 40th Frye. He knows what it takes to make a big event work. I look forward to attending his next event. It was a blast just being there! |

Bobby Hoover Bobby has been a member of our organization for a long time. Pitching both with the Churchville Horseshoe Club and the Fulks Run Horseshoe club his recent troubles with cancer have taken a turn. Your support and prayers would be appreciated. The Fulks Run Horseshoe club hosted the event in his name and donate the proceeds to help him and his family cope with his health problems.

The Ruther Glenn February Invitational By Kevin Snelgrove It is amazing the difference one month can make. It looks like many of the pitchers have been getting some practice in. Overall more than half of the participants pitched above their average for the February event. Ronald Walker, Herman Harper, Richard Owens and Trey McDowell all went home with patches in hand. Maryland sent over a few players. Johnny Monarchy, Linda Lepper and Craig Melvin turned out for the event. Johnny was the only one to leave with a trophy for third place. I would have loved to been there to witness Johnny and Herman Harper compete. Between the two of them, I'm sure they entertained the pitchers and all the spectators around. This is Kara Vannoy's second event using event using the Hs Master program and the bugs with downloading and uploading the files have been solved. Pat, our state secretary, extends her congratulations to Kara, she is doing an excellent job with the program. (Click here to see the results) The March Invitational is coming up. If you want to pitch in it call Kara at 804-514-4869. The Toll of time We lost a great ole friend on Monday February 20 Jr. Fogle from Maryland. Jr has been with the Frederick Horseshoe Pitchers Assoc from it inception. He was 86 years young. His contributions to the club and the sport will surely be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

The Snowshoe Festival I was pleasantly surprised reading the Sunday morning paper February 12. With 11 inches of fresh snow on the ground, our first major snow storm of the winter, I flipped over the front page and was looking at page three, and there was me! I was staring at myself taking up almost half the page! The event was a month old, and the paper felt it was a newsworthy story again and inserted it in the Sunday paper. This just proves my proverbial point to contact your local newspaper about your events. It may have more interest than you think. My appreciation to Mike Tripp the Daily News Photographer, he got a great shot of me. Click on the photo or here to view the page and story , Kevin The Ruther Glenn January Invitational The winter rust was a bit evident at the first sanctioned event of the year. Of the 18 pitchers that played, only two of them managed to pitch their average or above. Donnie Snowden tweaked out a point 0.15% above his average and Miles Noel managed 3.15%. The rest of the pitchers fell short of the entering percentage. Perhaps due to the rust, perhaps the feeling of pitching indoors, it's hard to tell why so many had a hard day with their averages. Renee Cowan, Don F Masters and Sherwood Brown all came out patch winners. Joe Presho, a brand new club member of the Richmond Horseshoe Club qualified in at 34%. He held his own for the day, with only 0.94% below his average. He wiggled his way into a three way tie for first place, finishing the day in third place. With this being the first event of the year, it was also the first event using the HsMaster Program and the group site that has been developed to support the program. Kara Vanoy and troops downloaded the database and with a bit of help from Pat Snelgrove had it up and running. A few minor glitches in the communication process where resolved and the results are posted. Click here to see the results. The February Invitational is nearly on us. Kara reported she still has a few openings. If you would like to pitch give her a call at 804-514-4869. The Toll of time

Mother Nature Delivers a "Perfect Day" By Pat Snelgrove
It was Mother Nature, right on the mark - she came through with temps dropping into the 30’s, and SNOW. It started snowing lightly around 11 in the morning, and the pitchers were cheering as they arrived. By 1:00, there was quite the snowstorm going on!! Everyone was dressed for the day – ready to pitch in knee deep snow, (continued on the next page) The Snowshoe Festival attracted the local newspaper, reporter Ruth Jones and photographer Mike Tripp covered the event. They presented a wonderful story that went to print on Tuesday January 17th. The article gave local readers an insight to "The love of the Sport" that is in all of us. Yes there was a little bit of inside help getting them there, but it goes to prove if you want to publicize your club you have got to go out and do something. First and foremost is "Call the newspaper" and tell them what you are doing. If you have printed out the 2006 Schedule check the Revision number, make sure you have the current version, Revision 6 is the current Schedule.

Wow, where did the year go! By Kevin Snelgrove
The official sanctioned season will start with the Ruther Glen Horseshoe club hosting the first three events, starting in January, one in February and again in March, Kara Vanoy is TD with Floyd as assistant. Pitching indoors on three courts the events all have a limit to the number of pitchers. They are all pre registered, if you are interested in pitching indoors and getting some early warm ups give Kara a call at 804-994-9628 or 804-514-4869 to get signed up.> The 2006 schedule Rev4 has been posted - there are a few events that the data is not complete and may be inaccurate. If you are involved with your club events please check the data for your events carefully and let me know what needs to be corrected. Don’t forget to check the pre-registered forms. As of today, they are the same as last years, Aside from the date changes, I need to know of any changes in the way it should be written. Let me know ASAP. Updates to the schedule will be posted as new information becomes available. It will be great seeing you all again on the courts. See you soon! “Birdie”, lifetime supporter of Dave Moser and the sport, passed away in early December. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. Birdie has attended many events throughout the state, always sitting quietly on the sidelines, but always in support of the pitchers and the sport. May Peace be with you!
