2006 State Singles Review

by Pat Snelgrove

Hurricane season came a little early in Virginia this year, with the advent of Ernesto on Labor Day weekend. On Wednesday, the VaHPA decided not to take the chance of being washed out, and postponed the event for two weeks. As things turned out, it was a good decision. Downpours in Winchester Wednesday and Thursday put the courts under water, even though the club had taken all precautions to cover the courts and try to keep them dry.

We whole heartedly thank the Winchester club members and especially Bill Melton, for their efforts on behalf of this event. The courts were in fantastic shape, members were available to help out, and Bill took the extra time and attention to mark out the foul line for the PeeWee pitchers ahead of time. Good job all, thank you.  Everyone arriving was pleasantly surprised

3rd annual Frostbite Classic
October 14th, 2006
By Janet Dunn

The Chesapeake Horseshoe Club held its 3rd annual Frostbite Classic. Although the day was very sunny there was definitely a frosty wind blowing to make the name a good one.

Out of the 20 entrees in the tournament we had several members from the Portsmouth Club, a State Champion, and 2 out of state pitchers. One from Pennsylvania and 1 from North Carolina.

Fun was had by everyone who participated and we appreciate everyone for their patronage.  The results are as follow:

Class A
1st Place Jackie Whetzel
2nd place Alvin Bowers
3rd place Ronnie Reeves
Class B
1st Place Kirk Adams
2nd place Donald Parkes
3rd place Gene Webb
Class C
1st Place Lee Sargent
2nd place Tony Webb
3rd place Jim Walls

Stuarts Draft Fall Finals
September 29, 2006
 By Pat Snelgrove

Phone calls the night before, and phone calls that morning, we were all a bit concerned about the weather forecast for Saturday. Predicting rain off & on, cool temps, things looked like they’d be miserable. The day did start out quite cool – real FALL weather. Then it started to rain abut 10am, and we were really concerned. However, the rain stopped about 11 and the breeze (a constant in Stuarts DRAFT) dried off the concrete. By 2pm, when pitchers started to arrive, conditions were perfect for pitching. The 40th Raymond Frye Memorial Tournament
September 9th 2006
By Bobby Burke

Friday, the day before,  9:30 am I checked the courts, absolutely perfect! The rains early week have provided just enough moisture.  I live 12 miles north of the courts, a storm passes early afternoon to the south, and I remember hoping that it’s not raining at the courts.  It did, arriving early Saturday morning and with the help of Club volunteers, enough courts were dried out  (continued on the next page)

In all of the tournaments I have attended, my camera is not far away. Much like pitching horseshoes “You have good days and bad days” my camera, my eye and my photographs are alike in that I have good and bad photos. With the running of the 40th Frye, my eye was keen and intune with (continued on the next page)

PS. Bobby Burke did a wonderful job running his first tournament. He has been around pitching for a long time watching his wife pitch. He has learned a lot from just being there and observing things. Bobby passed the HsMaster Training program, and with his observations and skills set up the event, he showed his knowledge, running the 40th Frye. He knows what it takes to make a big event work. I look forward to attending his next event.

It was a blast just being there!

The 2006 Summer Fun

Indeed it was FUN!
by Kevin Snelgrove

Right from the start, Ron Taylor and crew, along with the Newberry Parks and Recreation put on a show that is a must to see and attend!

The Opera House Opening ceremony was a huge success, there was no food left to bring over to the courts for later that evening. Pitching started on time as Ron and Crew were well prepared.

Pat and I arrived on the courts after eight Friday. A little late to get into the mode of taking photos, we were hungry. We met up with some other pitchers and went to eat at the “Cellar”. Their Prime Rib is out of this world. Great food!

Saturday morning, a brand new day! 9:00 AM pitching followed by 6:00PM was a bit unusual, but the mid day class at 1:00 pm was taken up with a break. No classes had been scheduled for the 1:00PM flight due to the high temperature. Instead, Ron and crew put on a variety show that was outstanding! Great entertainment! I was looking for Ronda and Vonda to return, but Little Emos stole the show!

Certainly a welcomed relief from the mid day heat!

Between Pat and I, I think we got photos of every pitcher Saturday and Sunday. We had a great time, we’ll be Back!  (Continued on the next page with photos)

By the time Ron Taylor got home late Sunday night the movie I made of Little Emos hit the “Forum News” on the www.horseshoepitching.com web site. (Click here to see the video).

Another Clue!

You are so close to getting the right answer for the 5th person, so far four individuals have answered correctly.  The person I am looking for starting pitching in the Metropolitan  Era (1920-30's)  pitching in our state. Quoting this person" I won the Metropolitan title in the following years 1932, 1933, 1934, 1939-1969 inclusive. A total of 34 times."

There is still time left, so far only two people have correctly identified this individual. The person is no longer alive and will be remembered for his contributions to our sport. His story spans many decades. His son is an active pitcher in our state.
Take a "STAUB" at it and be the 5th person to correctly identify this person!

STATE DOUBLES CHAMPION TITLE COMPETITION

The weather was perfect, the pitchers in fine spirits, what more could you ask for on a full day of pitching shoes? The forty pitchers had signed up with their own partners, and it was a very interesting mix – several teams of husband/wife, several more with father/son , and one made up of an uncle and niece. We all know that horseshoe pitching is a fun family sport, and this is one format that demonstrates it. (continued)

X-Trials
June10, 2006
by Pat Snelgrove

We didn’t know this was an open event. We always thought ‘XTrials STATE Team Tournament’ meant it was only for Virginia pitchers!” Once Bobby Burke said that to us, the lights went off in our heads. Kevin & I started talking to our frequent WV and MD pitchers to see if they’d be interested in trying out this format – and try it they did!!

With the influx of those pitchers, we ended up with a full 12 teams – the maximum we can handle in one flight on twelve courts. The interest this year was so great, sadly we had to tell some people we were full and couldn’t take any more registrations. We thank all the participants for a really fun day of pitching.

With a maximum cap of 150% for the teams, we had a range of 149.02% (Cowan Crushers) to 105.26% (Ringer Revengers). We split the teams into two groups of six, white group and yellow group, and set them pitching 6 man round robins.

As we explained the strategy of pitting team members against each other to the team captains, you could actually see the excitement growing. (more on this story with results and photos)

The Ruther Glenn February Invitational

By Kevin Snelgrove

It is amazing the difference one month can make. It looks like many of the pitchers have been getting some practice in. Overall more than half of the participants pitched above their average for the February event.

Ronald Walker, Herman Harper, Richard Owens and Trey McDowell all went home with patches in hand. Maryland sent over a few players. Johnny Monarchy, Linda Lepper and Craig Melvin turned out for the event. Johnny was the only one to leave with a trophy for third place. I would have loved to been there to witness Johnny and Herman Harper compete. Between the two of them, I'm sure they entertained the pitchers and all the spectators around.

This is Kara Vannoy's second event using event using the Hs Master program and the bugs with downloading and uploading the files have been solved. Pat, our state secretary, extends her congratulations to Kara, she is doing an excellent job with the program. (Click here to see the results)

The March Invitational is coming up. If you want to pitch in it call  Kara at 804-514-4869.

The Toll of time

We lost a great ole friend on Monday February 20 Jr. Fogle from Maryland. Jr has been with the Frederick Horseshoe Pitchers Assoc from it inception. He was 86 years young. His contributions to the club and the sport will surely be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Nearly one month after

The Snowshoe Festival

I was pleasantly surprised reading the Sunday morning paper February 12. With 11 inches of fresh snow on the ground, our first major snow storm of the winter, I flipped over the front page and was looking at page three, and there was me! I was staring at myself  taking up almost half the page! The event was a month old, and the paper felt it was a newsworthy story again and inserted it in the Sunday paper.

This just proves my proverbial point to contact your local newspaper about your events. It may have more interest than you think. My appreciation to Mike Tripp the Daily News Photographer, he got a great shot of me.  Click on the photo or here to view the page and story , Kevin

The Ruther Glenn January Invitational

The winter rust was a bit evident at the first sanctioned event of the year. Of the 18 pitchers that played, only two of them managed to pitch their average or above. Donnie Snowden tweaked out a point 0.15% above his average and Miles Noel managed 3.15%. The rest of the pitchers fell short of the entering percentage. Perhaps due to the rust, perhaps the feeling of pitching indoors, it's hard to tell why so many had a hard day with their averages. Renee Cowan, Don F Masters and Sherwood Brown all came out patch winners.

Joe Presho, a brand new club member of the Richmond Horseshoe Club qualified in at 34%. He held his own for the day, with only 0.94% below his average. He wiggled his way into a three way tie for first place, finishing the day in third place.

With this being the first event of the year, it was also the first event using the HsMaster Program and the group site that has been developed to support the program. Kara Vanoy and troops downloaded the database and with a bit of help from Pat Snelgrove had it up and running. A few minor glitches in the communication process where resolved and the results are posted. Click here to see the results.

The February Invitational is nearly on us. Kara reported she still has a few openings. If you would like to pitch give her a call at 804-514-4869.

The Toll of time

The Virginia Horseshoe pitchers were saddened by the loss of one of their long standing members. Charles “Pugger” Wilkins, who passed away January 29, 2006. He gave all his life to friends and relatives in need. He was an avid sports fan his entire life, a bat boy for the Portsmouth Cubs in the mid-40s, excelling in baseball and horseshoes. He was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, the Alliance Church of Portsmouth and Suffolk Masonic Lodge No. 141. He was president of Craftsman Homes Custom Builders Inc. for 30 years and tiring of the building business, began hauling topsoil and firewood and made many new friends. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice Johnson Wilkins; his son, Charles Michael; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pugger was one of the founders of the original Portsmouth Horseshoe Club, a loyal member of the Moose Lodge, and an active member of both the Chesapeake Horseshoe Club and the (new) Portsmouth Horseshoe Club. We will forever remember him as a person who loved the sport, and when meeting new people, one of the first questions he always asked was: “Do you pitch horseshoes?”

Mother Nature Delivers a "Perfect Day"

It was Mother Nature, right on the mark - she came through with temps dropping into the 30’s, and SNOW. It started snowing lightly around 11 in the morning, and the pitchers were cheering as they arrived. By 1:00, there was quite the snowstorm going on!! Everyone was dressed for the day – ready to pitch in knee deep snow, (continued on the next page)

The Snowshoe Festival attracted the local newspaper, reporter Ruth Jones and photographer Mike Tripp covered the event. They presented a wonderful story that went to print on Tuesday January 17th. The article gave local readers an insight to "The love of the Sport" that is in all of us. Yes there was a little bit of inside help getting them there, but it goes to prove if you want to publicize your club you have got to go out and do something. First and foremost is "Call the newspaper" and tell them what you are doing.

If you have printed out the 2006 Schedule check the Revision number, make sure you have the current version,

Revision 6 is the current Schedule.

Wow, where did the year go!

By Kevin Snelgrove

I know what I did, but boy time just flew past. Lots of good times are still in my mind. The holiday break gave me a bit of time to get caught up with the web site. Can you believe the first event of the year is only 12 days away Saturday January 14, 2006! Rain, sleet, snow and cold or hopefully sunshine and 80 degrees, the Stuarts Draft Club will be hosting the Snowshoe Festival at their courts. It is a non sanctioned event winner takes all, $5 entry fee, 21 point games, double elimination format. Bernie McGough will be at the helm as Tournament Director.

The official sanctioned season will start with the Ruther Glen Horseshoe club hosting the first three events, starting in January, one in February and again in March, Kara Vanoy is TD with Floyd as assistant. Pitching indoors on three courts the events all have a limit to the number of pitchers. They are all pre registered, if you are interested in pitching indoors and getting some early warm ups give Kara a call at 804-994-9628 or 804-514-4869 to get signed up.>

The 2006 schedule Rev4 has been posted - there are a few events that the data is not complete and may be inaccurate. If you are involved with your club events please check the data for your events carefully and let me know what needs to be corrected. Don’t forget to check the pre-registered forms. As of today, they are the same as last years, Aside from the date changes, I need to know of any changes in the way it should be written. Let me know ASAP.

Updates to the schedule will be posted as new information becomes available. It will be great seeing you all again on the courts. See you soon!

“Birdie”, lifetime supporter of Dave Moser and the sport, passed away in early December. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. Birdie has attended many events throughout the state, always sitting quietly on the sidelines, but always in support of the pitchers and the sport. May Peace be with you!
