PERFECT GAME SCORED BY WALKER The weather was perfect, the pitchers in fine spirits, what more could you ask for on a full day of pitching shoes? The forty pitchers had signed up with their own partners, and it was a very interesting mix – several teams of husband/wife, several more with father/son , and one made up of an uncle and niece. We all know that horseshoe pitching is a fun family sport, and this is one format that demonstrates it. We had four classes, and mixed the A & B’s together. Kenny Puffenbarger Jr used this event to qualify from Junior status to full 40 foot, and it seems as if the adjustment didn’t affect him very much at all. Ken Jr and dad Kenny took D class by storm, winning all five of their games, loosing none. Their team percentage at the end of the day was 22.39%. Second place winners, Glenn Bouley and Yogi Guyer finished with a team average of 19.8%. In C Class, Amanda Tolbert, junior girl, and Uncle Kirk took first place with a 4-1 record. It was enjoyable to have Amanda pitching with us, and she had a really good day, finishing with a 28.67 overall. Second place had a three way tie, broken by percentage and awarded to team of Cyril Coleman and Richard Owens. Their team percentage for the day was 26.67% ! One of the interesting tidbits about the results at the end of the day was that these team-mates had identical pitching stats when they finished. Both had exactly 33 ringers, making their personal average 26.61 each. There’s nothing like stiff competition among friends, and in B Class the competition was tight. We were all treated to good natured ribbing and running commentary between courts as the teams faced off against each other. As the dust settled at the end of the day, Bill Hartless and Ed Thompson had won first place, winning all their games 7-0. Glen Ritchie & Bobby Hoover weren’t just giving them the title, however, their only loss of the day was in their game against Hartless/Thompson, earning the second place. And of course, the main attraction for the day was in A Class – the title for Virginia State Doubles Champion – was defended by Ricky & Amy Hall. They’ve held the title for nine years, this was their 10th season to try to earn the position again. They were challenged by the team of Hearl Kelly and Ronnie Walker, formidable opponents indeed. A Class pitching started off with a BANG, when in the very first round, Ronnie Walker pitched a perfect game with 8 shoes, 8 ringers. His partner, Hearl threw his 8 shoes, got 5 ringers, and between them that ended the game with 41 points. Their opponents in that game, Randall Weakley and Ronnie Hicks didn’t even have time to catch their breath before the game was over. And the didn’t score a single point. 41-0 was the final score. Congrats! Ronnie Walker on your perfect game! Having gotten a real “warm up “ with the mix of B Class pitchers, the final game of the day was the Hall/Hall team up against the Walker/Kelly team, defending the title of State Doubles Champion. That game lasted 20 shoes, and Amy threw an impressive 17 ringers, missing only 3, and Ricky threw 12 out of 20. The team of Walker/Kelly must have been a bit tired, because they disappointed even themselves. Hearl said “I just don’t know what happened, I fell apart.. BUT I’ll be back next year to give it a try again.” That’s one of the things we love about Hearl, his optimism and good sportsmanship. He and Ronnie shook hands with Amy and Ricky, grinning the whole time. “We’ll be back!!” they said. I’d like to thank all of the club members that pitched in to make this a successful event – from mowing the grass to closing the courts at the end. Their assistance makes all of our visitors comfortable, and their efforts are appreciated. See you on the courts again soon !! Pat |
