What a great day for pitching horseshoes!! The weather was perfect, the pitchers in fine spirits, setting up to run the event accomplished with no last minute hiccups, attendance better than expected, what more could we ask for? Carl Otto’s tournaments are always fun to go to. And his new group of club members have such enthusiasm and energy, they’re a great group to have around. Most of the pitchers responded to the day – most pitched over their entering average, with newcomer Tyree Jefferson taking the day with a 12.34 over his entering stat, completing the event with a 30.89% stat. In D Class, Edward Jordan, first place winner, proved that percentage isn’t always the telling factor. Ed won first place in the class with 5-1, his only loss of the day was given to him by Kevin Snelgrove. Ed’s overall percentage for the event was 12.92, vs Snelgrove’s overall of 20.00 . As a matter of fact, in the class, four out of seven pitchers had better ending percentages than Ed – he was just opportune with his wins and losses. In C Class, Norma Venevage pitched a game against Cyril Coleman and really burned up the turf – pitching 18.7% over her entering percentage. However, it was new Richmond member Tyree Jefferson who left the courts dancing and singing when the dust settled. Tyree was on a roll!! He finished first place in the class with a 7-1 record, after a heated playoff against club member Richard FC Owens. Tyree’s ending percentage for the day took first place also in High-Over-Average, by pitching 12.34% over his entering stat, to end up with a 30.89% for the event. Way to go Tyree!! The B Class competition was stiff all the way around. Entries ranged from 28% to 37%, and the pitchers were up for a challenge. Ronnie Reeves, second seed going in, took first place in the class with a 7-0 record, seeming to breeze his way through the competition. Overall, he pitched 11.11% above his entering stat. In that class, I also had a good day – my final percentage was 37.59 for the day, but I took the unofficial title of High-Game-Over-Average, pitching a 58.82 against Jeff Hiser. We were keeping score ourselves, and everytime Jeff handed the clipboard back to me, I kept thinking “wow, that’s my score with all those X’s”. It was just one of those games where everything worked in sync, and worked well. Sorry Jeff. The ending score was 42-7. But, to bring things back into perspective, I ended up 5th out of 8 in my class! The A Class competitors faced off with Herman Harper, new member from the end of last year. Herman met up with the sanctioned side of the sport last year at a non-sanctioned event in James City County. At that event, he and Lenwood Conners went head-to-head for the tournament title. It’s been a rubber match ever since. And the Richmond Open didn’t change that. Herman and Lenwood each stood with a 4-1 record at the end of scheduled play for A Class, forcing a playoff. It was a good close match, but Lenwood was a little bit off, and Herman was a little bit more on. Herman took the class first place and took home the prized patch that says “2006 Tournament Champion”. We can’t wait to see these men meet on the courts again some day. It was great competition all day long. The pitchers went home happy, and Carl Otto is grinning ear-to-ear, watching his boys bring home the trophies. Their stories, joys and frustrations are what Carl’s been hoping for all these years as he’s worked to build his club. Great going Carl, great going guys!! See you on the courts again soon. Pat |
