Sleepy Hole Park The City of Suffolk has been exploring the idea of bringing horseshoes into their Sleep Hole Park Facility, and on Friday, November 18th a meeting was held with the Parks and Recreation Department, the Portsmouth Horseshoe Club and the VaHPA’s Regional Director. Sleepy Hole is nestled along the banks of the Nansemond River, with an 18 hole golf course, a (Frisbee) disc golf course, a beautiful play ground area and numerous trails. The P+R Dept thinks horseshoe courts would be a nice addition to the facility. Donnie Snowden, President of the Portsmouth Club, has worked with the Suffolk Peanut Fest committee over the last 2 years and explained the interest he has seen in the area for pitching shoes. Jim O’Quinn, Treasurer of the club, recently moved to within a few miles of the Sleep Hole Park, and expressed he would be willing to help build and organize a club to use the courts on a regular basis. Sherwood Brown, League Director, brought numerous photos and albums showing all of the courts in Virginia. As RD, I helped explain the excitement that has spilled over in the area from the start of the Chesapeake Open, the formation of that club, and the enthusiasm that has developed. The Portsmouth Club formed 2 years after the start of Chesapeake and with their help the Suffolk Peanut fest has expanded. Terry Baronner (Parks Superintend), Cheryl Pisani (Park Ranger) and Tameka Dillard from Parks and Rec asked many questions to everyone. Tameka was very excited about the possibility of holding a clinic and tournament for the city. Cheryl explained the operations of the park with what happens throughout the year at the facility. At the conclusion of the meeting Terry expressed that he is very interested in the possibility of building a pitching complex and felt that it would be a very positive asset for the park. He said he would work with his budget and will try to find the funding for building the complex. With the help from a local club it might be possible in 2006 to start building the facility. After years of the prospect of losing the courts at Kitchens Restaurant in Petersburg new hope is on the horizon. The Circle K Horseshoe Club will reemerge over the winter, thanks to the effort of Mastin Kitchens. Mastin was heart broken as the club fell apart over the years. The conditions at the Circle K courts gradually declined due to lack of maintenance and use. Mastin took it upon himself and approached the Dinwiddie County government to see if he could find a new home. News arrived late last week that the Dinwiddie Parks and Recreation has received permission and funding to build a new facility at the Dinwiddie Community Center, about 2 miles south of the existing courts. Mastin has set a goal to have the new courts up and running for the 2006 season. Spearheading the efforts, he is hopeful that many of the former members will assist him in reforming the club and over seeing the new construction. Three sanctioned events will be planned for next year, early spring, summer and a fall event. A non sanctioned event is also in the works to attract new club members. If the new courts are not completed in time for the events the original courts may be used. The new courts will be seen easily from Route One and the traffic in and out of the Community Center will give the club better visibility in the community. It is a huge task that Mastin has taken on. If you would like to help in the rebuilding of the courts, contact Mastin or the Web Master and let them know you want to be a part of the rebirth.

The Stuarts Draft Fall Finals Shoes flying high in the air, rockets soaring into the clouds, both must land on their targets. A very interesting mix of events was the scene at Schnieder park in Stuart Draft on Saturday Sept 24th for the Stuarts Draft Fall Finals Horseshoe Tournament. 28 pitcher’s launched their shoes in the hope of winning their class, pitching high in the sky with the hopes of landing on the peg. A minor distraction (continued on the next page, results and photos)
