Organizing a Tournament
An editorial By Kevin Snelgrove
For many of the pitchers that attended the state singles this past
weekend it was the first time they had experienced the HS Master
program. Some people had questions about the new round robin cards
and the method of play. The tournament committee this year had
decided to try the program and limit the shoes in the qualifying
rounds, with the exception of a playoff for first place in each
class. It is here that I want to make my point.
In Virginia, TDs have developed the custom to have a playoff for
first place in all classes. According to NHPA rules, this is not
necessary except for the Championship Class or "top class" of each
event. It is at the discretion of each tournament director to use
this way to break a tie. I favor a shoe limited game with no playoff
except the top class. The World Event is run this way, and so are
other large events, so why should we be any different? The winner of
each class can be decided by wins / losses then percentage and then
points. Only the top class would have the opportunity for a play
off.
At any event with less than 40 pitchers play offs can happen with
out making a huge delay in the day, with over 40 pitchers that
factor grows, over 70 or more and you will be pitching well after
midnight.
Having limited shoes provides the tournament director the tools
the needed to control the clock and make the event enjoyable for all
of the pitchers. Pre registration and shoe limits are a great way to
control the event.
The events that Pat and I manage have been the only
events that have embraced the use of a computer in our state. A
little extra time is involved setting up our PC or Laptop and
printer, but that is a small price to pay when the benefits of
accurate data and speed of reporting make the event enjoyable for
the TD as well.
Let 's get all our clubs on board and use the computer for what
is it good for, Accuracy, Speed and Reports! The HS Master program
makes it easy for everyone, without the need to purchase a
full-blown software package. It's free for download at
www.horseshoepitching.com
, and worth trying out. It makes running an event an breeze! .
The computer is never wrong, it is the human that makes the
error!
I would love to hear your thoughts. Sign the guest book or send
me an email.
