From
the Desk of the Regional Director,
Kevin Snelgrove
Discussions are under way to bring horseshoe pitching to the
Williamsburg area. The James City County Fair Committee is committed to
have a non sanctioned event at the county fair August 12th and 13th,
2005. Pat and I met with JD Townsend of the County Fair and Extension
Office on April 30th to tour the site of the event and help them select
an area that would accommodate some courts. Pat and I will also be
assisting them in running the event.
The fair will take place on public property which is under the control
of the James City County Parks and Recreation Department. The fair
committee has been working with the P+R department for several years
running the fair. The park is very similar to the Claudius Crozet Park,
with a swimming pool, pavilions, playground and open fields.
With a good turn out for this years event, is it likely that when the
fair moves in 2006 to a larger facility that a more permanent horseshoe
complex will be built.
You can
follow this link to view a 360 taken from the middle of the park.
A lot of details have to be ironed out over the next several weeks and
as soon as the rules to the event are written I will post them on the
web site.
The Hanover Spring Open
By
Chuck Duymich
The weather was overcast and the clay was hard, but this did not stop
twenty horseshoe pitchers from coming out to Pole Green Park in Hanover
County. The tournament was double elimination with 21 point
games. Brent Leuzzi the overall winner went straight thru the
winner’s bracket only losing 1 game in the finals to runner up Jim
Hill. Randy Walker came in 3rd place losing to Jim Hill in the
Semi-Finals. Everyone had a great time, the people that entered
the tournament received a hat and shirt for coming out. We want to
thank the Hanover County Parks and Recreation department for building
these fine courts at Pole Green Park and for sponsoring this
event.

By Debbie Barbour
The Fourth Annual Carl Frye Memorial hosted by Winchester Horseshoe
Club on April 16th, was blessed to have a beautiful sunny day.
Sixty four pitchers representing four States signed up for the Carl
Frye Memorial.
Opening the event Mrs. Frye and son, Keith wished everyone good luck
and her son Keith Frye pitched the first horseshoe to get the
tournament started, after that the pitchers were ready to get the rust
out.
After reviewing the final results, some of the pitchers picked right up
from last, they haven't missed (continued

The Toll Of Time

It deeply saddens me to announce that our dear friend Denny Davis
passed away on December 12th, 2004 , after a long and brave struggle
against cancer. Denny is survived by his wife Faye, children Dwayne,
Elgin, Marcie, Holly, and their spouses, and numerous grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.
Dennis “Denny” James Davis was born January 17, 1953, and has been a
member of the Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association for over 19
years. At
his passing, he was a much respected member of our “A” class elite, a
left handed pitcher that threw a turn-and-a-quarter shoe. His entry
into the sport started in D Class, but gradually rose to
the A Class
level, which he maintained for many years.
Within our organization, at a state level, Denny held the position of
3rd Vice President, VaHPA for three years, from 1987-1989, under the
presidencies of Doug Shaw and Earl Linkous. For the next two years,
1990-1991, he held the position of 1st Vice President under presidents
Buck Herring and Earl Linkous.
He was nominated and elected into the VaHPA Hall of Fame as Pitcher in
2003, with many accomplishments being recognized. He was ever the
soft-spoken advisor and communicator for pitchers in the ranks, giving
advice when asked, more often showing by example.
More locally, Denny has been a member and officer of the Churchville
Horseshoe Club, and a member of the Stuarts Draft Horseshoe Club.
He pitched his
last sanctioned tournament in May of 2004,
in his favorite spot, under the towering oak trees at the Churchville
horseshoe courts (the photo above was from that event). All of the
pitchers present celebrated his arrival
and his efforts to keep-on-keepin’ on. His presence enlivened all of
us, bringing an extra sparkle to the day. He brought sunshine and
brightness with him, in his upbeat attitude.
I remember a conversation with him at the 2003 State Singles, shortly
after his personal battle against his disease. He spoke fondly of
the peach in his life - about his wife, his family and his friends,
expressing that he would miss us all but assured me he was in good
hands with his Lord and will see us all again. I was touched by his
openness.
In this photo, I had climbed on the roof of the pavilion at the Dublin
courts to get a photo of their courts. Denny just happened to be
pitching and bantered with me. It was his style to always be friendly
and full of jokes and pranks at our events. He encouraged all of our
pitchers to do their best, but not get too serious about the game – his
enthusiasm was catching, his joy for life immense.
In this photo, I caught Denny and
his wife Faye relaxing in between
things, just enjoying the moment. As always, his smile captivates you,
welcoming and so warm.
I searched my libary and put together all the photos I could find of
him.
Follow this link - the photos are reminiscent of his love of life
and our
sport. I will forever remember his smile.
On behalf of the VaHPA we extend our deepest sympathies to his family,
friends, and associates.
For Faye, Dwayne and Kerrie, Elgin and Carrie, Marcie and Matt, Holly
and Justin , Craig and Pam, Brian and Erica, Steve and Judy, Larry and
Bonnie, Rita and Mike, John, Hayley, Brandon, Jackie,
Matthew, Josh, Daniel, Haley Elizabeth, Gavin, Eason, Thomas,
Bret, Cody and many more
nieces and nephews our hearts are with you .
He was well loved by all that
got to know him. We will miss him immensely.
Sincerely,
Kevin Snelgrove
