Stuarts Draft Fall Finals

What goes up, comes down ! Shoes flying high in the air, rockets soaring into the clouds, both must land on their targets. A very interesting mix of events was the scene at Schnieder park in Stuart Draft on Saturday Sept 24th for the Stuarts Draft Fall Finals Horseshoe Tournament. 28 pitcher’s launched their shoes in the hope of winning their class, pitching high in the sky with the hopes of landing on the peg. A minor distraction was the local rocket club. They also held their event in the early afternoon. Starting around 1 PM the pitchers had to concentrate hard as the Shenandoah Valley Aerospace Club launch their rockets. A small price to pay as it was extremely entertaining. With the quick glance and yes a few long pauses to watch the rocket land the pitchers took it in stride. A few of the rockets required a very long look. From 4 inch rockets to the culmination of the day, a 72 inch, 6 foot rocket. The WHOOSE even caught me by surprise a few times; running the desk keeping stats that sound caught my attention. I found my self many times running out from the cover of the pavilion to watch! When the tournament was all over with, many pitchers stayed to watch and mingle with the rocket club and vendors. There were a couple of hot games in A class, Buck Johnson pitched a blazing 80% game, 16 ringers out of 20 shoes over Charlie Walker. Ronnie Walker also had a great game throwing 23 out of 28 shoes, 82.2% against Randy Rickard. West Virginians Greg Dotson and Allen Withrow made the journey to the Draft, Allen finish second losing only to Ronnie and Greg ending up third. Granville Weakley took the spotlight in B Class winning with a 5 and one record. His only loss was to another West Virginian, Wayne Burdett. Bill Hartless finished second by percentage over Robert Tinley from Dublin. C and D Class require playoffs for first place. C Class Betty Weakley and WL Doss faced each other in the playoff with Betty emerging the Champ. While in D Class Ronnie Hicks and Tommy French battled it out. In the last round of play Ronnie beat Tommy forcing the playoff between them. In the play off Tommy showed no mercy pitching 40 to 20 in 40 shoes, taking home the patch.
