Absence
The VaHPA Sec
is completing a
global mailing this weekend, so the schedule and application
information will be in your
mailbox
this week. I appreciate
the emails,
guestbook postings and phone calls that some of you have made
concerning what
is going on with me and the site. I owe you all an explanation for my
absence,
and will keep it brief: My family is doing fine, some of us had the
flu,
but overall, we’re doing fine.. I’ve been totally consumed keeping my
personal
business running and at the same time expanding. To make sure
you understand, what I do
on the VaHPA site is strictly on a volunteer basis. The page
costs the
VaHPA nothing, I pay out of my pocket, for the web space and site
registrations. My time and effort is at no charge. I
could use
some help keeping things updated, please let me know if you’d like to
assist. In the
meantime, updates are in
the works, Keep watching! |
The
2004 Pitching Schedule 2004 Membership Application Spam Junk emails have been a huge
problem for me the last couple of months. With email addresses listed
on these web pages, we are easy targets for the spider engines to
capture. In the process of updating the site I will be removing the
direct links to any email address and will receive all incoming mail in
a general incoming box. Unless you tell me specifically to leave your
personal email address as it is, your direct address will not be
available on this page.. One more tool in the defense against junk mail
and viruses. Once received, the inquiry will be forwarded to your
personal address.

Health Alerts
Kirk Adams is recuperating from hip surgery. Kirk had injured and
cracked his hip a few weeks ago. With pins and scews the doctors fixed
his hip, and Kirk hopes to be well enough to pitch in the State
Singles in September. Denny Davis came over and visited at the Grottoes tournament last week. He's travelling back and forth to Roanoke for treatment five days a week, but is determined to stay up and active as much as possible. Bill Hartless played four games of shoes with him earlier this week, and said Denny was going pretty well. Ben Robinson is on the road to recovery, he and his wife Pat are walking daily, and the doctors still have him on light activities. Paul McMahon visits and pitches shoes with him to help him keep in shape. We hope to see him during the next couple weeks in Winchester. The Otto Classic

Just after the Dublin Tournament June 28th, Tommy French from the Dublin Club had emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine. He is home now and is recovering well, but expects to be in recuperation for several months. Tommy's address is 231 Whitaker Lane, Pulaski, VA 24301 He and Ginny could also use your support while they work their way through getting Tommy back on his feet. Back in May, Ben Robinson from Vienna, wasn't feeling well while at the National Senior Games, and was taken to the hospital. It was found that he had blocked arteries in his heart. Since then, he has gone through treatments trying to clear up the blockage using medications, and then last month had quadruple bypass surgery. Ben is now home and doing well. Both he and his wife Pat thank the horseshoe pitchers for their continued support. If you'd like to send a note, Ben's address is 8705 Sudbury Place, Alexandria, VA 22309 Delissa Sturtz, Winchester, had hip replacement surgery in early June. She is home recuperating and thankful for her many horseshoe pitching friends that helped out while she was laid up. If you'd like to mail to her, the address is 177 Smith Drive, Winchester, Va 22603 And personally, about a month ago, my back started giving me problems again. Numbness in the leg etc., I still have appointments to meet to determine my course of action. For now I have to take things real easy. Today I'm feeling much better, but not up to pitching just yet. Time will tell..
Arriving on Friday, the day before the tournament, Pat & I were a bit apprehensive that the clay would be clumpy and messy. What a surprise we found. Fresh in the courts and only slightly packed the clay was working up real well. Watching the pitching Friday night you could see the clay was holding together, shoes sinking and holding. Friday night, tremendous thunderstorms hit the area, flooding a few of the courts. Courts 11 and 12 were un-pitchable Saturday morning. Compacting would have saved them but being so new the tightness in the clay was not there, making for soup. The courts were uncovered, and by late in the day they were ok, and by Sunday they were perfect. Running the event I kept a watchful eye on the new clay. Very little water was added to any of them and yet very little clay spilled out of the pits. It looks like it will work up perfectly in a very short time. Johny still has at least 20 tons of this clay piled up. It would be worth your trip to Maryland to get some.
From the Regional Director and Web Master's Desk This summer has been extremely busy for Pat and I. Traveling around the state promoting the sport and meeting new people. A lot of our effort has been focused on the central and eastern shore and it is paying off for the VaHPA organization. The Portsmouth Club and the Hillside Club are growing and new leads have developed in the neighboring areas. With all the travel it has left us with very little extra time. It takes a considerable amount of time to gather information and write stories for the VaHPA web pages. All of which is volunteered personal free time. You could help out by writing stories about tournaments you attend, or run. Pat & I can only write about those events we are actually at, or that we receive information on. Your stories can be submitted on paper, or via email, either way. It would be greatly appreciated. I realize there are several event results not posted yet, and I will get them uploaded as soon as I can. Your patience is appreciated. Kevin |

By Kevin Snelgrove In my April 27th update to this web site, a request was made for horseshoes to donate to a group trying to pitch – 40 kids with only four sets of shoes – the Hillside Boys and Girls Club in Richmond. The response was great - 20 pairs of shoes, a whole bunch of recycled trophies, and some member sponsorships for juniors. With the items collected, Pat and I scheduled a junior clinic at the Gilles Creek Park on Saturday July 12th . With help from Sonya McDowell, we put together a one hour presentation on pitching horseshoes. Pat gave a brief history about the origin of the sport, starting with “quoits” and working through to the present form of pitching. Then Sonya and Pat played a brief game as a demonstration while I kept score on an oversized score sheet. The demo done, the juniors picked shoes from the donations, and were off on the on the courts – they had a blast, and kept score for their own games. At the end of the day, all 11 juniors present voted to form a league – and the Hillside Horseshoe Club came into being. Wyatt Kingston, Director of that chapter, is really enthusiastic, and is thrilled that ‘his kids’ now have 10 times more shoes than what they started with. His and our sincere thanks to the Hix Family, Ric and Amy Hall, Chuck Duymich, and Carl Otto for their donations. The donations have not stopped, this past weekend Billy and Jamie Morris donated 4 more pairs of shoes. Thank you both! If you would like to sponsor a child to pitch in this sanctioned league it only costs $5.00 to buy their NHPA membership. A fund is being set up to support this group going forward. If you would like to be a sponsor, please send a check to the Hillside Sponsor Fund, c/o Kevin Snelgrove, P.O. Box 625 Stuarts Draft, VA 24477. If you have horseshoe donatations please give them to Pat, one of the state officers or myself, and we will make sure they are passed on to a needy child. For the children of the Hillside Chapter of the Richmond Boys & Girls club, thank you for your help. How many pairs of horseshoes can you ring

The Lynch Mob The 2003 State Team Champions! Captain Raymond Deal (L), Mark Bunch (TC), Nick Matsko(BC) and Marvin May(R) The 2003 X-Trials Thanks Mom! I woke up early Saturday morning 4:30 and just like I do every morning took my stroll to get the newspaper. A full moon low on the horizon, clear skies and the birds singing so loud, pausing in the driveway I said a little prayer to my Mom wishing her a happy birthday and asked her if she had any pull with Mother Nature to turn the faucets off for the day. State Team Competition By Ricky Hall The X TRIALS tournament was a good one and I hope it becomes an annual event. As a team captain, I realized right away how important the strategy of pitting each of my team members against the opposing team members was. Starting the tournament, name tags with individual pitcher’s stats were handed out. Everyone put them on. They were very useful during the first 2 or 3 games. I noticed other team captains looking at the percentages on the nametags when they were trying to set the line ups when they won the "toss". After several games, people were going up to the result board and seeing what their next opponent was actually pitching. (Thanks to Kevin and his computer program, he could post game-by-game results.) This tournament had a different rhythm to it than singles, (continued on the next page)

By Mike Dodson April 15, 2003 I just finished reading the article on the web site and looking at the pictures from the Chesapeake Spring Fling held on April 5, 2003. What an exciting day and what a way to win my first tournament. I have always enjoyed pitching but had never realized until that Saturday afternoon what inner emotions, enjoyment and friendships can develop in just a couple of hours pitching in your class with four other pitchers. After I lost my first two games, I figured that I was out of the running for one of the trophies. I learnt a valuable lesson that afternoon. "You have to pitch every shoe like it's means something and you can never give up on yourself." You just have to pitch the best you can and sometimes it will be your day to win. For the Hillside Junior Horsehoe League By Pat and Kevin Snelgrove Wyatt Kingston s a counselor for the Hillside chapter of the Richmond Boy and Girls Club. Devoted to his kids, he has spent many hours teaching them values, skills and sportsmanship. Working with only 6 pairs of horseshoes for 40 or so children, he has taught them the fundamentals of pitching, and would like to start a horseshoe club, but lacks the equipment. Pat and I have agreed to sponsor his kids in the VaHPA/NHPA if he gets organized. Equipment is a big hold up, so we ask you to help us out a bit if possible. If you have an extra pair of horseshoes , a broken pair, or trophies that can be recycled, and you are willing to donate, give them to Pat, Carl or myself and we will make sure Wyatt gets them. If you would like to join us in sponsoring a Junior, $5 is all it takes . A worthy cause, can you help? Let us know!

Old Dominion Tournament LOOKING FOR SPONSORS!!! The VaHPA is still looking for class sponsors for this tournament. Sponsorships are only $50 per class, and can be made be individuals, groups, clubs, businesses. The proceeds from this tournament help keep the entry fees for the State Singles as low as possible, so it's important that we get sponsors for each class. This year's tournament, in particular, has lots of extra visibility for the sponsors. The tournament is running immediately in front of the National Senior events, and we're expecting lots of out of state pitchers, visitors and spectators. Contact any VaHPA officer if you or anyone you know is
interested in sponsoring a class. Thank you.

The format of play is singles, double elimination. After the singles event another round or perhaps a Doubles, double elimination will take place, depending on the participants left. Last year Pat and I had attended the event representing the VaHPA. We handed out pamphlets and literature on the NHPA. Mark Mater who had been in email contact with us through out the winter of 2002 attended and asked many questions about the NHPA and league play. Later on that spring, he formed King Williams Horseshoe Club, and with the support of Hanover County has used the courts for their 2002 season and will use the courts again for the 2003 season. Mark said “Hanover County has been very good to us over the last year, but our club feels the need to find a place closer to home." (Mark and most of the club members live 20 miles away from the Poor Farm location.)The club is working on finding a location in King William County. The 2003 Hanover event lands on the same date as the Petersburg Open, Pat and I have decided to attend the Hanover Horseshoe Tournament. It was a hard decision, but we felt the need to be in Hanover promoting the VaHPA and the NHPA. Time permitting, we will try to get over to visit at Petersburg. The King Williams Club and Hanover County would appreciate all pitchers that attend. If you can make it, come over and support this new club. Perhaps we will see you at both events!
Mother Nature Wreaks Havoc on the First Two
Events of the Year! Pat and I attended the Feb 8th event. The weather dealt another surprise snowstorm a few days before, and not knowing what to expect, we were driving up the road nearing the Hix Homestead, and I just barely applied enough braking power to turn into the driveway. There are days when I am sooooo glad to have four-wheel-drive. Entering the complex, a loud roar could be heard. Oh yea! Heat! After a while the noise of the space heater blended into the background, drowned by clanking shoes and people talking. Looking around the courts, I could tell I was in for an experience. My first observation was the raised courts similar to those used at the World Events, and then I noticed the basketball hoop hanging about mid court. I said to those around me “With my luck I’ll score a few points”. Indeed I did, in my third game - I scored a big three points in the net. It took Miles Noel with Trey McDowell held over his shoulders to get my shoe back. It takes a while to get used to the close quarters. The ceiling is not a problem for most people. Elden with his high shoe was the only one to hit the ceiling. DUCK!!! When I finally got up the nerve to throw a shoe, I met Dana Newton, new to the sport and recently joined the Ruther Glen Club. We sparred for a few rounds before we noticed a window missing in the garage door. A few of the members were placing plastic on it to keep the heat in. One of the panes had been covered with plywood, one with plastic and 2 with glass. Elden said “Don’t worry, the other two have plexi-glass”. No sooner did he speak those words when Dana’s shoe hit the top of the peg, bounced and you guessed it - broke the window. Glass everywhere!. After the mess was cleaned up and the window covered, the games began. Needless to say, I did not fare well in my class, but I did have a lot of fun trying. The raised courts provided a rebound, kind of like the ball return in a bowling alley. Many of my short shoes returned past the 20 foot mark and one of them I only had to walk five feet to retrieve. Pat was not as intimidated pitching indoors as I was. She fared much better in her class. The winter rust in my shoulder, as in yours, will take a bit of time to get back into pitching. Beware, if you have invited to the next event and one of the Hix Family members is in your class, be sharp! Find your rhythm as fast as you can. They are used to the courts and most certainly have an advantage. Being the first open event for the club, it went very well. Ruth provided breakfast, lunch and dinner for those that attended, and only asked for donations to the club. Thank you Ruth! I’ll come back for your ham biscuits anytime! The club has another tournament coming up in March - if
you‘re invited, be prepared and ENJOY the experience!
By Kevin Snelgrove On behalf of the VaHPA, our sincere thanks to Kenneth and Clay (Rocky) Henson Jr. for providing an enlightening documentation on the history of horseshoe pitching in our state. Between them, they are producing a CD of “Boo” Henson’s pitching history, complete with news articles and photos from the 20’s, 30’s and forward. Their efforts have certainly changed my views on the way I've presented Virginia’s history as web master. I will try to include some of the information that has been provided with each site update made. The warmth of the photo at the top left of this update is only one example of an amazing moment of time. To see the complete file of that reproduction is truly touching. As a byproduct of trying to get “Boo” Henson inducted into the NHPA Hall of Fame, Ken and Clay have created a wonderful history of pitching in Virginia. When it’s finished, and in its final form, it will be worth purchasing, with many newspaper stories and photos. Personally, I am overwhelmed with the richness of their documentation. They have done an excellent job! I would like to encourage any family, club or individual who might have documentation, stories or photoes about pitching in this state, to produce a similar CD of events and friends. Digitizing your photo albums and scrapbooks will last for ever. With the right tools and some amount of effort, you to can add to the historical files of our state. Be creative! Need a little bit of help? all you have to do is ask. Call me, I'll do my best! The photos at the top of the page are part of a small contest. “Who are these pitchers?” The way to enter this contest is to post your answers on the VaHPA guestbook. The first 3 correct responses will receive a “Got Shoes?” magnetic bumper sticker. 1. Name the man & woman in the top left photo.

Which Brothers Are They? Not the Blues Brothers, not the Roach brothers, not the Frye brothers not the Breeden brothers, not the House brothers, nor the Staton brothers. This is not the Perry's or the Hix's. Is this the Schaefbaurer brothers, or Webbs? Maybe the Millers? They are brothers, but which ones? Who are they? The 2003 National Senior Games The National games are held in the odd years. Entries into the games come from the previous years winners of thier state in each divisions. Chesapeake. Kirk Adams, President of the Chesapeake Horseshoe Club said
his club will be ready and will help out however they can. Its Snow LIE!!! The Chesapeake Horseshoe Club has some nutty players!! Its Jan 17th, Schools are closed for snow!! Ike Hicks, Kirk Adams, Talmage Dunn, Dave Moser, Richard Revelle, and a new young man being introduced to horseshoes: Bruce Cahoon(high-schooler) all met at the Chesapeake Park to play a serious game of capture!! It’s noteworthy that Kirk and Ike had been playing for a couple of hours after sweeping snow from the pits and turning the mud...in freezing weather no less!! We found out that Ike Hicks is really a COLD weather player, taking the majority of the games with Kirk and really snow plowing everyone else in the big game!! You know we've got it bad when we pitch in this kind of weather! Looking forward to the "Spring" tourneys! Everyone have a great winter! That's snow lie! Talmage Dunn, Chesapeake Horseshoe Club!!
Lynchburg Event Coming Soon! Marty Coleman is working with The Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and The City of Lynchburg preparing the details for at horseshoe tournament at Miller Park this year. The format and date will be announced as things develop. He is also trying to get a league started on the courts. The courts at Miller Park were the birth place on the VaHPA organization. Marvin May held many tournaments at the location in the early 60’s and 70’s It was there that the VaHPA formed the backbone to the organization as we know it today... If you are interested in helping Marty or want to join the
league call Marty at 434-332-5564 By Tonya Hix We had our February Invitational on February 8th, 2003. Our January tournament kept getting postponed until we decided to have it regardless of the weather. We had yet another good snow storm that week here in Caroline County. Good thing the courts are in-doors. Regardless, most of the people scheduled to pitch showed up. Okay, it helps that most of them were family. We only have 3 courts so we had to limit our invitations. We held 3 shifts and pitched a 6-man round robin in each. Kara did most of the work of inviting everyone and setting up the classes. Ruth provided plenty of food with ham biscuits for breakfast and hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. It was a very eventful day. We started the day (continued on net page with results and Photos) A New Club Forming in Crozet! Anthony Morris from Crozet is trying to get a new club started at the Claudius Crozet facility. Anthony and a number of his friends have been pitching at one of their back yards for years on a regular basis. Pitching friendly games with no record keeping Anthony said it was time to organize. Anthony’s family has been involved with the Crozet Horseshoe Club since it started. Ed Hunt approached Curtis Morris, owner of Curtis Heating and Cooling Inc. when Ed first starting building the courts in the early 90’s for a donation to build a court. Curtis Morris agreeded and their name has proudly hung on the fence all these years. Kevin Snelgrove, Rd, has agreed to work with Anthony and help him develop a league. A meeting will be set up for sometime this spring to form the league. The time and place of the meeting will be announced on the web site. If you would like to attend, contact Anthony at 434-823-5811 or Kevin at 540-337-4689.
Donnie Snowden had been spearheading the newly formed Portsmouth Horseshoe Club, In December, he reported 8 members. Donnie has been very active over the winter months promoting the sport. He recently went to each of the fire stations in Portsmouth and met with the fireman. His efforts gain 6 new members to the club. The problem the club faces now is where they pitch? Donnie is working with the city to find a location for the courts. The Coast Guard station has 5 courts and could possibly provide a temporary site. Finding a sponsor to use the base and Homeland Security will be a factor. He is also talking with the Chesapeake club to use their facilities while they find a permanent home... If you would like to join the Portsmouth Club Give Donnie a

What is is it? A very interesting way of playing horseshoe with a large number of pitchers on one court. Dave Moser developed the idea and the Chesapeake Horseshoe Club has been perfecting it over the very short break for them this winter. The concept started out with 4-7 people showing up on a
Sunday afternoon all winter long! No league play, no tournament. The base to the game is 45 points. It make for some very interesting and sometimes upsetting
play.
Pitching for fun!!! Give it a try you might like it! Come show off your pitching skills !
