In tribute to our men and women in the United States Coast Guard, we were honored to host our first horseshoe tournament for the U.S.C.G.'S annual picnic at the at the Integrated Support Command , 5th District Coast Guard Base in Portsmouth, Virginia. Approximately 2000 individuals attended the festivities. The Coast Guard went all out and had a grand day for their personnel and their families. There were volleyball tournaments, softball tournaments, *horseshoe tournament, closest to the pin golf tournament, rock climbing, model boat racing, roasted pigs, southern fried chicken, and all the trimmings at no charge. Our horseshoe tournament was a great success with 24 sign-ups, 4 class winners, overall winner and runnerup. The class winners were : Class A = Johnny Tillman won 3 lost 0 Class B = J. Puryear won 3 lost 1 Class C = Kenny Mealer won 4 lost 0 Class D = R. Dominigist won 5 lost 0 1st place overall winner= Kenny Mealer Runnerup overall winner = Johnny Tillman Sandra (Sandy) Hardison, MWR Director for the Coast Guard-Portsmouth introduced us to the XO for the Portsmouth base and both thanked us for volunteering to conduct the horseshoe tournament,and extended an invitation to repeat this event again next year. They gave us U.S.C.G. t-shirts and free tickets for some "cold" beer and offered to up-grade (improve on) the court area that they were so gracious to let us use for our regular season play this season. We want to thank the U.S.C.G. and the Vahpa's Kevin & Pat Snelgrove for a wonderful day and we hope we can be of service again next year for such a great group of people.
