Military Children's Horseshoe Clinic June 8th, 2003 By Kevin Snelgrove
Donnie Snowden, President of the Portsmouth Club, is doing the right things promoting his club and the sport, but MotherNature has her own plans. The Junior Clinic was held despite the rainy conditions. A low and disappointing turnout did little to dampen the spirit of the club however. Kirk Adams, President of the Chesapeake Horseshoe Club and Amanda Tolbert, a Junior member of that club, attended to lend their support and help teach the sport of pitching. Amanda is the bright star in our state this year as a Junior. Only pitching for a year, her average percentage has climbed 20%. She says she owes it all to her dad (Anthony) and a few tips from Amy Hall. My wife Pat and I attended as representatives of the State and National Organizations and brought pamphlets and documentation if they might be needed. We were all impressed with the way Donnie had come prepared for the event. A video “Back to Basics” starring NHPA President Dave Loucks was played and everyone in attendance learned from it. Neatly lined up on a table were rows of information about every aspect of pitching, and although few juniors attended, many of the club members and adults present took the packets. Between the clubs, talk is about combining efforts, Chesapeake and Portsmouth Horseshoe Clubs, and hosting an open clinic later this year The auxiliary support provided by the wives cannot go unnoticed. Banners, balloons, munchies and serious food for hungry pitchers was provided with pleasant chatter and smiles. We look forward to their next event. Kevin
