For one tournament at least, the day wore on without rain, despite
the forecast. What a relief it was to be able to hold an actual event without
mud in the pits, or rain delays. We had 34 pitchers turn out, and that
included a few that showed up early to practice for the National Senior
Games that would start the following Monday.
The Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association would like to thank this
year’s sponsors: We depend on their contribution, and appreciate their
support!!
A Class Great Bridge Archery, Chesapeake, Va 23322
B Class Winchester Horseshoe Club, Winchester Va 22604
C Class Trophy Case, Stuarts Draft, Va 24477
D Class Rick & Amy Hall, Moneta, Va
E Class Jack Frost Enterprizes, Chesapeake, Va 23322
F Class King Custom Storage, Stuarts Draft, Va 24477
G Class Waterfront Electric, Chesapeake, Va 23320
H Class VaHPA
A&B classes were pitched together, and in A Class, Amy Hall came
in 1st with 5 wins, no losses. She didn’t have her best day pitching, however,
finishing up with 71% overall. Ricky Hall, her husband, gave her a run-for-the-money,
making round 5 last for 72 shoes! She scored 49 ringers, while he scored
42 – hot pitchin’ Ricky, keep it up!
In B Class, Doris Miller from New Mexico took first place, with 5 wins,
no losses. Although Wayne Sturtz, our own from Winchester, gave her a tough
time, coming in with 4-1, Doris was his undoing.
C Class pitcher David Turner from Chesapeake came in 1st place, looked
at the final standings, his own at a 51.79% overall, and finished the day
with a question “what does it take to be in A Class? What is the cutoff?”
Now THERE’s a man with aspirations! Go for it Dave! You’re well on your
way!
The Chesapeake/Portsmouth crowd had a class by themselves in D. Marvin
Chesson, Chesapeake took the class with a 5-1 record, winning out
over Tony Webb, also Chesapeake, in a playoff match. Marvin was on fire
for that game. Primed and ready to go, he pitched 20 ringers out of 48
shoes, a very impressive 42% which Tony just couldn’t match. Great day
Marvin! Way to go!
Amanda Tolbert, red hot Junior pitcher on her way up, took E Class by
storm with 5 wins, no losses. Her closest round was the first one against
Scott Fencil. She won that game, was now warmed up, and blew the rest of
the games out of the water. She ended the day with an overall percentage
of 43.7, while the next highest pitcher in her class, TC Stewart had 31.4%
. Amanda is on the road to A Class, watch out David, she’s on your
tail!!
Kevin Snelgrove had a tough time in F Class, defending the Valley against
those local Chesapeake boys. Gene Bridges, Chesapeake, dominated the class,
coming in first with 7 wins, no losses, after a stiff game against Sherwood
Brown, Portsmouth , who came in 2nd with 6-1, Gene being his only loss
of the day. Can you feel this friendly grudge match in the makings?
In G Class, we had the second playoff of the day. Norma Venavage against
Janet Dunn. Fellow club members, this was serious stuff. Tied at shoe 50
with a score of 29-29, the spectators were on the edge of their chairs.
The tie-breaker was a 4 shoe throw. Norma threw a double ringer with her
next two shoes, and Janet didn’t cover either of them. Although she threw
a point on the next two shoes, Norma had just won the game. Janet had the
higher percentage, with 14.2% for the day, but Norma won the day with a
5-1 record, finishing with a 9.9% overall. This was great competition
ladies! We’ll see you back on the courts real soon!!
Hope to see you all back at the Chesapeake courts for the 3rd Annual
Open Tournament on July 18!
