The Day Started out overcast but playable. The first annual Chesapeake
Spring Fling got underway, There were thirty pitchers in all. With only
twelve pits to use the classes were staggered. Classes A, B, and D started
the day off. Players in Class A were: Horace Phillips, Ken Henson, Donnie
Boykins, Dave Turner, and Pat Snelgrove.
About halfway through the match there was a rain delay, since
we were ending our short monsoon season, and play returned in about an
hour. Unfortunately there was one player less. It was an interesting turn
of events…the winner of the class was Donnie Boykins, posting a 4-1 record.Ken
Henson came in second with a 3-2 record, and Dave turner came in third
also with a 3-2 record. Ken and Dave were separated by ringer percentages,
Ken with 37.32% and Dave with 36.05%. Pat Snelgrove also had a 3-2 record
but her ringer percent, 35.41% was just a little low.
Class B had 6 players: Dave Moser, Kirk Adams, Gene Webb, Robert Snowden,
Patrick Doyle, and Phillip Law. They too experienced a rain delay but finished
up in clear cut lines. Gene Webb won the division with a 5-2 record, 2nd
place went to Patrick Doyle with a 4-2 record, and third to Dave Moser
with a 3-2 record.
C Class had some great play and a repeat for first from the Petersburg
tournament in the 1st and 2nd place category. The players in class C were:
TC Stewart, Tony Webb, Talmage Dunn, Jack Miley, and Don Masters. First
place play came down to Don Masters and Talmage Dunn just as it had the
week before in Petersburg. Don Masters continued in his winning ways and
won over Tal in a commanding performance. Don was first with a record of
5-0, Tal Dunn , 2nd, with a record of 4-1, and third went to Tony Webb
with a record of 3-2.
Class D was also a class of 6. The players were Ike Hicks, Darren Ricks,
Bill Freethy, Doug Geske, Alma Doyle, and Marvin Chesson, Play went very
well in the class. Marvin Chesson and Ike Hicks were forced to a
play-off for the championship of the division and Marvin Chesson surviving
to the end. Usually, third place is determined by ringer percentage in
the event of a tie, but in this unusual circumstance, Darren Ricks and
Alma Doyle had the exact same ringer percentage down to the hundred –thousandths
place, forcing a play-off for third place. Alma came through in a 40 –
15 point win and took home the trophy. First place went to Marvin Chesson,
record : 5-1, 2nd place to: Ike Hicks with a record of 4-2, 3rd place to
Alma Doyle with a record of 4-2.
Class E had to be the class of the day!!! At the end of regular play
there was a FIVE way tie for FIRST PLACE!!!!! It seemed that all these
guys were just being great to one-another. Unfortunately someone had to
take the trophies. The players had to decide by playing again in a series
of 25 points or thirty shoes games. It was quite exciting watching the
play-off for this class. Mike Dodson came out on top in his first win ever,
finishing with a 6-2 record, 2nd was Gene Bridges, and 3rd was Scott Fencil!!
What a class!!
Class F ended the day with only 4 players in the bracket, they each
played one another twice. 1st place went to Amanda Tolbert with a 5-1 record,
2nd place to Sherwood Brown, and third to Norma Venavage.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the day , especially after the sun came out
and really warmed things up. A great time was had by all !! Thanks to all
the pitchers who came out from Stuarts Draft, Richmond, Petersburg, and
North Carolina.
Until the next tourney,
Talmage Dunn out!
