Claude "Lee" Painter 10/25/17 --- 12/9/2003 by Kevin Snelgrove "Lee", the name most people knew him by, succumbed to his 13 year battle with cancer on Monday, December 9, 2003. A great friend to many horseshoe pitchers in the State of Virginia, Lee was pitching shoes with D.W. Strickler when DW died in 1997. His lifetime friend gone, Lee kept going, challenging life and those who came in contact with him. Gordon Parker, his good friend, visited the family frequently and remarked "Lee was always a competitor, we joked often that 'If I can't beat you in horseshoes, I'll beat you in checkers.' Lee won most often. A week or so before he died, I joked with him. 'Ok I can't beat you in horseshoes or checkers, but I can in Rummy'. A deck of cards was found, and yes, Lee won the hand. It will be hard to fill the void of his friendship." Always a driving force, in the early '70's, Lee convinced the Waynesboro City Council to build the courts at Ridgeview Park. He then formed the Waynesboro Horseshoe Club and the Valley Industrial League with help from his friends Gordon Parker, Chuck Cascio, Bob and Cindy Dean, DW Strickler, Dave Callison, Carl and Teresa Staton, Steve Hall, Flloyd Draper, Bill Blankenship, Ed Hunt, Wayne Flipping and many others. Lee organized many tournaments at Ridgeview and touched our lives. In 1994 Claude "Lee" Painter was inducted into the Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association's Hall of Fame as an "Old Timer". The Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association wishes to express its sincere sympathy and condolences to his family at this time of their loss. He leaves behind his wife Dorothy, 60 wonderful years of marriage, two sons, two daughters and numerous grandchildren. At this time of extreme medical expenses, Dorothy can use all the help she can get. Assistance and contributions can be mailed to her at 2003 Goose Creek Rd, Waynesboro, Va 22980. In his remembrance, donations can be made to the Hospice of the Shenandoah. Their constant support and presence has helped the family over the years. All contributions will be greatly appreciated. Health updates! Governor, we all wish you the best of success, Are you going to wear the Sombrero to the events? It might be your lucky charm! Ronnie Hicks has postponed his hip surgery for personal reasons, please keep him in your thoughts as he deals with his ordeal.. Wayne Sturtz knee surgery has been successful. He reports he is feeling much better and looks forward to pitching with a lot more comfort next year. Robbie Schefbauer is doing great, Amy reports he is 99.9% back to normal. A small motor skill dealing with writing needs some improvement.. He is is back to driving, a bit more cautiously and is back in school. A few months behind she is confident he will make up for the lost time. Amy put off her own surgery due to Robbies accident but hopes to have her bone spur taken care of and be recuperated by the Dogwood. Buckie is also doing great. Thank God for insurance, we would have lost everything without it.. If you have any news about any individuals in our family, please let me know.
is moving forward! By Kevin Snelgrove Robert Snowden, founder of the club, recently presented a petition to the City of Portsmouth to build sanctioned court in one of the city parks. Dr. James Holly III, Mayor of the City thanked Robert and the new club for their interest expanding the recreational amenities of the City of Portsmouth and is forwarding the petition to other members of the City Council for their information and to the City Mgr. , C.W. 'Luke" McCoy for his review and consideration. The Mayor also said the timing was good, as the council is entering into budget deliberations for the next fiscal year (2004) over the next several months. The Parks & Rec. dept. has been informed also and has said they would bring it before their board for consideration. Robert said " We a planning a big year in building the membership of the club and also the general publics knowledge of our plans for bringing horseshoe pitching into our main stream of sports in Portsmouth." Currently the club has 8 members, pitching in their back yards on a regular basis. They look forward to the day when they can pitch side by side on mutilpe courts If you would like to join the club give Robert a call at 757-465-1900.

It is between Richmond and Charlottesvile! The signs on my truch work in mysterious ways. I travel around the State in my business, and the signs promoting the website get responses. Practically every day I'm on the road, my signs generate a conversation about horseshoes. While on a job site recently, the name Kevin Bowman was given to me. He has 3 courts in his back yard, and has held numerous tournaments over the past couple of years. I called him and invited him to participate in our schedule. Time will tell! Kevin RD |
holiday season! Fundraiser
Every year at the World Horseshoe Tournament they have a convention where the delegates from each state meet. When they meet they discuss the NHPA rules and regulations, vote on where the World will be in 2 years, and many other items that affect the sport of horseshoes. For a while now, they have been asking for donations to help build the National Horseshoe Pitcher's Hall of Fame and to finish the 2 buildings Jack Freeman has started. They are also trying to complete the campsites. This will all be in Tennessee. The NHPA is trying to promote the sport of horseshoes and get these facilities built so they can host a World Tournament there. This would bring the World Tournament closer to home. Renee Cowan who is the 1st Vice President for the VaHPA attended
The Frost Bite Open
It started off cold in the morning and stayed that way all
day as you well know. I guess that name "Frost Bite Classic" co-sponsored
by Jack Frost Enterprise and Chesapeake Tennis Corp. Lived up to it's name.
A Class was a close call between Pat Snelgrove, the eventual champion and
Ken Henson with David Moser taking 3rd. In B Class, newcomer Don Masters
takes 1st and Phil Law takes 2nd while also first timer Alma Doyle takes
3rd. In C Class we had a 3 way tie for first with Kevin Snelgrove taking
the first tie-breaker game over Newcomer Eric Bridges giving Eric Third
and then the final game of Kevin battling Richard Revell. Kevin finally
takes the championship after a good game by both. I hope all had a good

(continued on next page with photos) “Not enough time in a day!” On that we can all agree. It has been a while since I posted an web update for that very reason – not enough time, I’ve been extremely busy lately. As webmaster, aside from simply finding the time, the hardest part of what I do is finding something to write about. I’d like to ask all of you that are reading this, to try to contribute to the VaHPA by writing a little something. Maybe a story about your tournament or league, a visit to another state’s tournament, and your experience there. Maybe you can take a few photos and include them. Write a story about a tip. How you pitch shoes might help someone else. Write an editorial. I could use your help and also the Editor of the Ringer Review could use your help. If you’re reading this, you have internet access, but there are many individuals in the VaHPA that do not have that access. Some of those folks subscribe to the Ringer Review for their updates. For the past few years, the VaHPA Secretary has also been filling the spot of Editor for this publication. The Secretary position has its own set of demands and requirements that take precious time. The position of Editor is a separate function in our organization and we are asking for your help. Can you volunteer some of your time putting together our newsletter? Please let Pat or Ricky Hall know if you’d be interested. They can answer any questions you might have about what is involved in it. In all aspects of the VaHPA, if we all contribute a little bit, it makes the job a lot easier for everybody! To those that have submitted information to either the web or Ringer Review, our organization APPRECIATES your efforts!. Kevin
The 2003 Schedule is now posted on the site. If you are involved with your club's schedule and see a mistake in what is posted please let me know so I can correct the information. Something new on this year's schedule. A quick link to our neighboring states' schedules. Many of you have asked me when a major event in another state is happening. The quick link should help you find that answer.

HORSESHOES AND I make a dangerous pair. Anyone who wants to play with me should wear a helmet. Take one of my recent pitches on the courts in Chesapeake City Park. We started on the first Sunday in March and had 17 pitchers for our
spring session. Anthony Tolbert won the spring session
The second league or our Summer League started up in May and ran through the end of July with newcomer Dana Byrum winning the League with a 12 win and 4 loss record. Dana also had High Game Over Average which was a whopping 29.9 points over his average. I think that game was against me, I kind of bring out the best in everyone I play. But to keep things going David Turner had High Game and also High Average for the Summer League. Now talk about your hard-core horseshoe pitchers, we just finished our Fall League on December 8th. It really got cool (temperature) on the last 2 weeks but we still had a lot of fun. Patrick Doyle showed everyone he likes the cooler weather by posting an 15 win,1 loss to win the Fall League. Newcomer Gary Yount Took honors of High Game Over Average with an awesome game of 30.1 points over his Average. Ken Henson finishes Out the awards with High Average and High Game for the Fall League. We all had a great time for our first year as a Sanctioned NHPA Club and look forward to stating up in the spring. Kirk |

Winchester Horseshoe Club A special thanks to Donna Keefer for finding us a room. The area had a couple of major events going on - The (Hot Air) Balloon Festival and the Battle of Cedar Creek Re-enactment, and there were no rooms to be had. Donna kicked in and helped us out. Thank you Donna!! We did get to see a few of the Balloons flying Saturday afternoon when we arrived, and a whole lot of actors Sunday morning at the hotel & at breakfast. I was a bit disappointed Sunday - the balloons took off around 7 am, and we missed the launch. We enjoyed the visit anyway. Pat From the Webmaster's Desk. The Chesapeake Horseshoe Club will be hosting the FrostBite Open Horseshoe Tournament, November 2nd, 2002 at the courts in City Park, Chesapeake. This event is sponsored by the Jack Frost Insurance Agency. Sign up cut off is 10:00, get here early to warm up! The weather in Chesapeake is a lot warmer than the rest of the state. We are closer to the gulf stream than the rest of you, and lots of times, the valley is at 50 and Chesapeake stays at 60 or more. Come on out for some late season fun! And don't forgot your fishing
pole. The Spot, Croker and Blues are biting. Last week while I was on the
Sandbridge Pier I saw a 60 pound Red Drum. Come early Friday and stay the
weekend. Let me know you're coming and I'll point you to the pier.
The intent would be to invite the higher classes one month and the next month the middle, followed up by the lower classes. It's a great idea and we wish them the best success. Kevin Robbie Schefbauer is home!. He is recuperating from a bad car accident and will face months of rehabilitation. Although there were no broken bones, he did receive "head trauma" during the accident. But he's home doing fine. Both he and his family are doing well. Amy and Ricky can't express that enough - they are very grateful for the doctors, the medical care, and all the cards and prayers that you have all sent. Please keep them in your thoughts as Robbie and his family continue to move on. Recent surgeries: Evelyn Zahorchak, some of you saw her at the Frye
still with a cane. Wayne Sturtz, just through with knee surgery.
The holiday season is upon us. Have a safe and happy season! !!!!!!!

Please keep Amy and Ricky Hall in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with their son's recovery. The Virginia State Singles Horseshoe Tournament 90% complete (8/31/2002). The men's championship round pitched 5 rounds on Saturday evening. Sunday morning a much needed rain appeared forcing a postponement of the final rounds in the championship rounds. The final rounds will be held at the Grottoes courts, Saturday September 14th, 9:30 A.M. 2002 Virginia State Singles Horseshoe Tournament By Ricky Hall Saturday August 31, 2002 Hosted by the 3 Winchester Clubs The weather forecast for the Winchester area on Labor Day weekend was overcast skies with a 40 % chance of rain through Tuesday. We were blessed with beautiful weather Saturday morning. 122 pitchers signed up to compete and even with rain in the forecast, only 4 pitchers failed to show up. The State Council decided to try a new format for the Men's top class. We took the top 8 pitchers who signed up and put them in a 16 man class, and we moved the next 8 highest percentages up to fill a 16 man class. After about five games had been pitched in the first round, I was really amazed at the number of pitchers who kept coming up asking if they had a chance at making the top class. It definitely created Firecracker Classic
