Kirk Adams reports that 11 courts are in the ground. and the 12th court is in process. The city felt for the12th court, that it would be in their best interest, to make it wheelchair accessible. Six of the courts are in operation now and the remaining six courts are being worked on. The Chesapeake Horseshoe Club will be setting pegs and landscaping in the next few weeks on the remainig courts.

Point being - watch out for the grill if you're in the Draft, it's solid steel, set in cement, and didn't move or get dented at all. Pat can't say the same thing for the back end of her brand new car !!
If no one takes advantage of the grill before we do, the Stuarts Draft
Club plans to christen the grill when we have our club tournament next
weekend.... it'll do some awesome chicken! Bobby Johnson says
he has the recipe!

Membership for the VaHPA is at its highest in eight years of data on the State's computer, up 22% compared to the ending membership for last year. In 2001 we had 222 members in our organization, as of June 25 , 2002 the VaHPA has 272 !! The growth is not only in the Horseshoe Alley, Rte 81, but has spread eastwards and south across the state, from Dublin to Roanoke, to Richmond and on to Chesapeake.
1995 had 243 members
1996 had 263 members
1997 had 267 members
1998 had 223 members
1999 had 253 members
2000 had 247 members
2001 had 222 members
It's only June and we have 272, a record year!
2003 can only get bigger and better. The challenge will be how to balance
the new influx of tournaments. The support in attendance is critical to
the success of all of the clubs and especially the new ones. Please show
your support and attend their events. It will help all of us grow.

The Virginia State Doubles
June 22, 2002
By Pat Snelgrove
The National Anthem
has been a long standing tradition of all of the Winchester Clubs. The
VA State Doubles enjoyed the song sung live by two young ladies
-
Jennifer Perry and Jill Newlin. Jennifer is Greg Perry's daughter and Jill
is her best friend. It was a very uplifting start for the day, and the
pitchers showed their appreciation with applause and multiple compliments.
The VaHPA would like to thank the Northern Valley Horseshoe Club for
sponsoring this year. It was evident that the club had been working (continued

Computer Viruses!!!!! I can not emphasize enough! Update your virus program or purchase one and keep it updated at least weekly.
The PC that I use personally for email and writing web pages got infected along with 4 other machine I own 2 months ago, the past 8 weeks have been a daily fight in protecting my machines - both home and business It has forced me to be very careful in sending any emails and has tied up me up timewise all the way.Although for the web postings, there was little concern of infection.
Most viruses are spread via emails. Norton and McAffree are probably the most popular anti-virus programs. I have them both on the 5 machines that I or my business use. I lean towards Norton's as the better of the two programs. It seems to catch the culprits better than McAffree, but that is my opinion. Even thou you update your protection, to run the scan program to detect the buggers.
The point is update your virus protection often!! Viruses change so quickly all of us can be caught off guard.

Horseshoe Tournament By Debbie Barbour The Winchester Horseshoe Club hosted the 37th Annual Apple Capital Horseshoe Tournament with mother nature shining her blessing on us. I saved the best for last our (Continued
on next page)
By Kevin Snelgrove National has a great program not only for reporting the results, but actually running the tournament. I also wrote a program in Excel that runs and makes the report. Debbie Barbour has written her own Excel spreadsheet to report the data and then Email it to the web master and the state statistician. She herself has done a wonderful job of reporting the information for years. Give her a great big pat on the back the next time you see her. If you have a spreadsheet program on your computer, Works, Excel, Lotus, or any of the many shareware programs you can accurately report and send your stats. Other than cost, it does make a difference! Accuracy, reduced double data entry, and speed for getting things posted all add up for a winning combination!! If you need help, send me a note. Email is a lot cheaper than spending 34 cents for snail mail.

WE HAVE 3 WINNERS It did not take very long for the winners of the 1st contest to emerge. I will post the answers to the questions on the next update. Congratulations goes to 1st Mark Mater, 2nd Kirk Adams and 3rd Jackie Whetzel, 4th goes to Branson Miller. For those who have yet to enter, give it a try! I want to thank all of you that have entered, your comments are very
much appreciated and taken to heart.
An Editorial By Kevin Snelgrove The Stuarts Draft Horseshoe Club is still looking for TEAMS for the X-Trials Tournament! For those of you that have pitched at the non sanctioned King-of-the Hill Club tournament in the past years, I'd like to compare that with this team format. Pitching for your club is the same as pitching in a team, on a larger scale. Similar to the strategy of pitching doubles but with a lot more.. This is still a sanctioned event, but each round, the team captain pairs his team pitchers against the other team's pitchers. Strategy on the wins/losses. Your win or loss can forward the whole team. Yes this is a whole new format in Virginia, but it is not new to the horseshoe pitching world. The competition to get into the event in Tennessee is great and teams are actually turned away. Take a look around the NHPA and you'll find many team events. This is fun!! Please give it a try, and get a team together. What do you have to lose? Cut off is this weekend!
