Central Connecticut Horseshoe Club
Draw Doubles
November 17, 2002
By Pat Snelgrove
On vacation in New England, with nothing particular on the schedule Sunday,
Kevin & I decided to go visit the Central Connecticut Horseshoe Club,
which was holding a draw-partner doubles tournament. We checked the
map, got directions, had our plans all set. What we didn’t plan on was
the Nor’easter that developed on Saturday. Rain, sleet, and snow
fell overnight. It was still coming down when we started out on our
two hour drive Sunday. However, with the “snow-line” just a little north
of where we were staying, and where we were going, so we didn’t let that
deter us. Horseshoe pitching in the middle of a snowstorm seemed
like it would be a whole lot of fun!! (Thank goodness these courts are
indoors, or we probably wouldn’t have even tried it!!)
The CCHC has four courts that they pitch on year round – there are five
separate leagues pitching at the courts, one for every night of the week,
and tournaments every weekend !! They alternate sanctioned/non-sanctioned
tournaments every other weekend. It happened that we arrived on one of
the alternate weekends, for a non-sanctioned double elimination event,
which Kevin & I were glad of. This pitching indoors with a ceiling
overhead will take some getting used to!!
Don Maine, the tournament director called out the teams and lineup in
a very short time! Twelve teams were set up, and Kev & I had the opportunity
to pitch with some of the club members (being a nonsanctioned event, we
weren’t the only visitors). Although we were both knocked out
of the competition half way through, we had a fun time, and met some very
interesting people.
Winning the tournament were:
1st: Norm Rioux and Linda Shidell
2nd: Debbie Scully and Ed Bombadier
3rd: Bill Navratil and Don Nieto
Watching the final rounds, Norm Rioux kept us all in stitches. He can’t
wait until he grows his hair long so he can move up to the 30 foot line.
All of the people there made us feel just like we were part of the family.
We really enjoyed our visit, and plan on going back.
