| The first day of fall with a natural umbrella for the day was
the setting for the Stuart Draft Fall Finals. Mostly cloudy all day kept
the pitchers cool. 36 pitchers attend the last sanctioned event of this
year. Comfortable temperatures all day.
5 classes were set up. During the meeting in the morning Pat Snelgrove,
President of the Stuarts Draft Horseshoe Club announce that next year all
of the clubs tournament will run with 8 and 6 man classes, Handicapped
if necessary when the spread in the class is 18% or greater. Our club is
doing this to prevent 3 and 4 man classes.
3 classes started the day pitching, B, C and D class all 8 man classes
with A and E taking second flight.
In B Class, after 7 rounds Betty Weakley and David Cowan Sr. were tied.
6-1 forcing a playoff. David got off to a slow start missing the first
3 innings before he found the peg. It would prove to be his defeat as Steady
Betty jump out in front with a commanding 10 point lead. 18 shoes into
the game David tied the score 13 all and then taking the lead for the next
5 frames. At 26 shoes David had the lead 21 -19, but Steady Betty had had
enough, she produced 3 frames of doubles giving her a big lead 34-21. David
tried his best matching her ringers but could not cover them all. 40 shoes
Betty defeated David 41 to 30. Taking the 1st place trophy home. Despite
David's loss, he pitch very well for the day 1.3% above his average and
also held the highest single game of the class at 57.89%. Betty finished
the day pitching 3.8% above her average for a final of 43.35% on the day.
Dwayne Davis and Ken Henson squared off in the C Class playoff.
24 shoes into the game Ken held the lead 18-13, Dwayne them show a burst
of ringers taking charge 29 to 18 at 32 shoes. Looking like he had more
ringers in the bag. But Ken hadn't given up. The peg found Ken's shoes
and held on. The last 16 shoes Ken threw 10 out of 16 shoes taking the
game 40-32 in 50 shoes. Dwayne finished the day with 35.85% Ken had been
pitching extremely well all day. Pitching 7.9% above his average he also
pitched the high game in the class at 57.14%
D Class, John Cummings was 6 and 1 for the day, taking 1st place, Ken
Robinson finished 2nd with 5-2 and holding the above average in the class
at 1.6% Tonya Hix took 3rd. Miles Noel had an outstanding game against
xxxxxx pitching a blazing 55.26%
A and E classes both had clean sweeps. Renee Cowan had 5-0 and 63.22%,
with Denny Davis taking second and Paul Arnold third.
E Class pitcher Terry Sparks managed 3rd place, but out of all the pitchers
in the day holds the honor of Above Average. He pitched 8.18% above his
average. Quinlyn Dofflemeyer swept the class 7-0 he also had high honor
above average throw 6.78% above and overall 28%. Bobby Johnson (Grottoes)
held 2nd place. Trey McDowell our only PeeWee had a tough day with the
losses but pitched his best event of the year, throwing 6.12% for the day
even throwing a double. He was so proud of himself.
Trey while he was waitng for his flight to pitch was very helpful at
the desk. Running errands and asking me all sorts of questions about my
camera. I finally said to him , "Would you like to take some pictures?"
Yea! he said, so off we went. He took quite a few photos and did very well
with them.
When it was my time to pitch in the second flight, it was hard to concentrate.
As many of the pitchers who were leaving for the day came over to say farewell
until next year. It seems so far away today, next spring, but there was
a lot of talk about some late fall non sanctioned events, and maybe some
indoor sanctioned events So maybe well see you late fall or in the winter.
That sounds a little better.
Thanks to all of you for coming over, If I don’t see you soon have a
safe and Happy Holiday! And Yes we'll see you in the Spring!
