The Crozet Stuarts Draft Spring Open
April 27, 2002
Bright skies and the hopes of 26 pitchers greeted them at the Claudius
Crozet Park but missing were the organizers. Pat made a few phone calls
to find out where everyone was. A break down in communications had occurred.
The tournament had been cancelled. The pitchers mulled this over, and after
a few minutes of discussion the suggestion to move the event to Stuarts
Draft was brought up by Glen Ritchie. Pat and I agreed to run a sanctioned
tournament in the Draft.
The Crozet pits were covered back up and a caravan of cars left for
the Draft. Marvin May stayed at Crozet until 10:30 and informed a few late
comers of what was happening. Only one person dropped out in the move.
Talk about some die-hard pitchers, they came to pitch and pitch they did.
Four classes were set up with 1st place getting 50% of the pot divided
equally amongst the classes, second place 25% and the Stuarts Draft Club
25%. Everyone was happy with that.
Now to get 26 pitchers on 12 courts was a small challenge. One of the
X-Trials held at the Draft gave us the answer. A few years ago we had printed
out round robin cards, which put a six-man class on 2 courts and an eight-man
class on 3 courts. The six-man table gave us the answer. D class was the
6 man class assigned courts 1 and 2; A class 4 man on 3 and 4, and B and
C classes with very tight percentages took the rest of the courts. Everyone
kept their own score. By 11:30 the games began.
It was one of those days that things started out gloomy, but by the
chatter you could hear all day we all knew everyone was pleased. I was
pitching beside A Class - Nathan, Hearl, Jackie and Jim never stopped talking
and ribbing each other.
Pat and I were glad to be of help and appreciate all of the pitchers
for coming over. We also know that you all appreciated our efforts. In
the end, we all had fun.
See you on the courts!
