The State Singles fell slightly, perhaps due to the great turnout this year, while the Doubles person rose, into the 30% bracket. The Old Dominion pitcher threw more shoes with few less ringers, dropping the percentage a little. Keep practicing !

| The 1st Annual Chesapeake Open Horseshoe Tournament was held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29th and 30th , sponsored by the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Dept., and organized by the Virginia Horseshoe Pitchers Association and the Chesapeake Horseshoe Club. Using a unique format of having card holders pre register for this non sanctioned event, and the general public sign up on the spot, the tournament was a big success. (continued on the next page) |

| Virginia State Business Meeting Summary
The Annual State Business Meeting was held Saturday, October 13. The tentative 2002 tournament schedule was set. It will take a few weeks for all the clubs to check with their parks and local authorities before the permanent schedule is posted. If you need more information on the tentative schedule let me know. Represented clubs were Apple Valley, Northern Valley, Winchester, Grottoes, Churchville, Stuarts Draft and Dublin. Exciting news was presented by the 1st VP, Renee Cowan, about the re-emergance of a presence in Petersburg. That club had folded a few years ago, but there is still a desire locally. The Ruther Glen Horseshoe Club posted a tournament on the schedule to be held in Petersburg, and also will host one of our State Tournaments - the Old Dominion Summer Classic. To be added to the schedule is Richmond. Great courts in the ground, and the desire to hold a tournament. They're looking to hold one this year. Also, Chesapeake wants to hold a couple events, so the 2002 schedule looks to be a real callendar challenge ! Pat Snelgrove presented a number of bylaw changes. Of primary focus
were those items that needed to be updated to clearly show support of NHPA
bylaws & Official Rules of Horseshoe Pitching (and scoring). The changes
voted and passed removed a lot of the contradictions our current set of
bylaws had with the NHPA bylaws, and some only moved certain items into
the section pertaining to our state held events. A full posting of the
bylaws will be on line as soon as I receive them. Keep checking in for
updates.

Robbie Schaefbauer, Amy&Ricky Hall's son shattered his knee Friday September 28, one day prior to the Chesapeake Tournament. It took the power of the web - this site - for Robbie to make contact with his parents the next day.Health Updates Friday evening Rick and Amy were travelling to the Chesapeake tournament, and arrived very late at night. Being late, they did not call home to inform their family of wherethey were staying. An aunt had a friend in Virginia Beach - right down the road. That friend logged on to the web site to find the tournament location and then personally delivered the message that Robbie had been hurt. After a few frantic phones calls via cell phone, they determined it was time to leave and go back home to attend to Robbie. The Web does make a difference. They arrived in time for his surgery, and he is home & recuperting quite well. DeLisa Sturtz has been suffering with severe back problems all summer. Two days after she and Wayne attended the Chesapeake Tournament she underwent surgery to fuse disks in her spine. Two days after her surgery, she called from home to inform me the surgery was a great success. The pain she had in her legs is gone, and she's feeling great. She and Wayne both attended the business meeting. DeLisa is looking great. A little slow getting around, but her spirit and mobility is getting better every day. Please keep these folks and the victims, families and rescuers of the 911 WT event in your minds and thoughts. Help out where you can. |
