Welcome to the Chesapeake Horseshoe Club
by Pat Snelgrove

On Saturday, March 17, at City Park in Chesapeake, an organizational meeting for a new horseshoe club was held. The meeting was advertised in the paper and a mailing went out to former members of the Portsmouth Horseshoe Club. Several people showed up, and that was enough to get the ball rolling.
Kirk Adams was voted in as President of the new club. With a hopeful starting date of April 1st for the club league start up, a major challenge exists - as of the day of the meeting, the club has a single court to pitch on. Kenny Stuart (Chesapeake Parks & Recreation Dept) said they would do whatever was necessary to get 4 more courts by the 1st. The club decided to hold their league play on Sunday afternoons at 2:00.
Kevin Snelgrove (RD) has been working with Kenny Stuart throughout the winter organizing the Chesapeake Open Horseshoe Tournament which will be held Sept. 29. Both felt it would be in the best interest of the City and the VaHPA if a local club were to help host the event.
The City will be building 13 temporary courts for the September tournament, and has already made a tentative offer to build permanent courts for the new club. Although there is keen interest from the City at the Councilman level, the success of the club will determine the city 's commitment. Our support will help the new club succeed. Please attend the Chesapeake Open Horseshoe Tournament on September 29.
Keep checking the web site for more information about the tournament. Money prizes for class winners. Some classes will be pre-registered and others open to the public. This year, the tournament will be a non sanctioned event, but watch for next year and possibly the World Tournament to be held in Virginia coming up. Who knows, anything is possible.

What does it mean to belong to an NHPA Sanctioned Club?

For club members there are several benefits, two of which have just recently been announced by National - those being the Top Ten Awards and the Academic Achievement Awards for 2000. In Virginia, we can be proud of our pitchers that made the cuts nationwide, and offer them our sincere congratulations for a lot of hard work and effort.
