When we left
home early Saturday morning headed for Grottoes, I started looking at the
2001 tournament schedule to find a good rain date for the Old Dominion
Summer Classic. Last year's tournament started off just fine, for about
3 games and then the sky opened up. It had to be rescheduled a couple
of weeks later. It was looking like this year would be no different.
We arrived to find there were quite
a few others taking a chance the weather would change and we weren't
disappointed. The sunshine and warm temperatures brought out some new faces
and some familiar ones as well. A total of 51 pitchers competed in 8 different
classes for trophies that bore a new look, thanks to Renee Cowan our 1st
VP.
In class H, new comer Christa Hall went
undefeated and took home 1st place. Melvin Fitzgerald finished 2nd and
Terry Hensley & James Morris were tied for 3rd, but Terry 's ringer
percentage earned him the trophy.
In class G, Durwood Griffin took 1st place
going undeated, while Diane Barb & Eddie Gregory who were tied for
second, had to wait for the final scoresheets to be counted to find Diane
won 2nd by 1.44%. That's close pitching!
In class F, 1st place went to Charlie Leonard. Bo
Gormus finished 2nd, and Richard Miller won the three way tie with Butch
Thompson, & Lacy Houff.
In class E, Elaine Wimer and Rosette Cupp were tied after
their round robin play and had to pitch a playoff. After a close game,
Elaine came out on top. Elaine's another new pitcher taking home a 1st
place trophy, do you think she'll be back? Rosette finished 2nd, and Granville
Weakley received 3rd and pitched the highest percentage in his class.
In class D, Steve Wheeler and Pat Snelgrove
pitched a playoff game to decide 1st place.Pat lost to Steve earlier in
the day, but pitched well enough to win the playoff. Steve took home
2nd, and Marvin May finished 3rd.
In class C, Sheldon Worley also went
undefeated to win 1st place. Donald Parkes finished 2nd, and Glen Ritchie
won 3rd by having a higher percentage than Randall Weakley.
In Class B, Jackie Whetzel went undefeated
and took home 1st. Terry Figgins received 2nd place winning a tie breaker
with Ray Barb who finished 3rd.
In class A, Amy Hall finished 1st
going undefeated and averaging 81.55% . Amy's starting to warm up for the
2001 WT. Ricky Hall received 2nd and Ronnie Williams won the three way
tie for 3rd with Renee Cowan, & Ron Trobaugh.
