| Stuarts DRAFT held true to its name on Saturday, May 12. Eighteen
pitchers braved the draft to pitch in our doubles tournament. This is the
only other sanctioned Double Tournament held each year besides the Virginia
State. Although the breeze wasn't all that bad, traffic coming in
and out of the parking lot caused dust clouds that made all the pitchers
blink a few extra times. A comfortable day, mostly cloud covered, but no
rain! It's getting really dry around here. It would be nice if Mother Nature
would shed a few tears, just not on Wednesday (league night) or Saturday
(tournaments) would be nice.
The day was divided into 3 classes with 3 teams in each class, pitching
each other 3 times. The closest to a play off was in A class.
In the last round of play, partners Marvin May and Jim Barr (in 3rd
place) needed to win to force a playoff between (partners) Ronnie Hicks
and Randall Weakly against (partners) Jackie Wetzel and Glenn Ritchie.
Marvin was matched up against Randall, and tried his best to make Ronnie
pitch second against Jim. For most of the game he did. At 14 shoes the
score was Marvin/Jim 26 and Ronnie/Randall 11. Things looked like a sure
win for Marvin and Jim. We all know that anything can happen in this game,
and it surely did this time. Marvin and Jim fell apart. Neither could score
another point, letting Ronnie and Randall take the next 15 boxes, to end
up winning the game and the trophy.
The whole time, watching on the sidelines, was Glen and Jackie (in 2nd
place), rooting hard for Marvin and Jim. They wanted one more chance
at 1st place. Randall could be heard saying" Come on Hicks Pac, you
can do it!". After all the supporting comments, after all the ribbing
and riding, Glenn and Jackie had to settle for 2nd place.
In B class, Betty and Granville Weakley came to win, and that is exactly
what they did, Taking B class with 6 wins and no losses. Terry Sparks and
Pat Snelgrove teamed up. Terry really seemed to enjoy the doubles format.
He went in with 13.6% and pitched strong, ending the day with a 15.24%.
C class pitchers Glenn and Mark Bouley also enjoyed pitching doubles.
Glenn went in at 14.25 and finished with 20.95, Mark started the day with
22.35% and ended up with 26%. In one of Marks game he threw a 56.25 % game,
9 ringers out of 16 shoes. He was thrilled, an all-time high. Father and
son took the 1st place trophies home.
A fun, relaxing day for everyone.
