| The Big Oaks Horseshoe Club in Dublin held the Firecracker Classic
Tournament on August 5. Seventeen pitchers participated in the tournament,
and everyone had a great time. The club was pleased to have three
pitchers sign up with the VaHPA, and hope these folks continue to attend
our tournaments – Troy Akers, Roy Workman and Early Southern, good to have
you on-board!
In A Class, the percentage spread was really high, so the class opted
to pitch with a handicap. The outcome was a three way pitch off for first
place between Marty Breeden, Roy Workman and Ricky Hall. In the end, a
heated second round of pitching between Marty and Roy left the newcomer
holding the title. Congratulations Roy!!
The B Class top seed, Mark Bunch had his work cut out against Troy Akers.
With some really close games, Mark ended up in first place with 6 wins,
0 losses.
In C Class, Marvin May was having a really good day pitching.
When I got up to throw against him, I knew I had to do my best – he had
just ended up pitching 48% the previous game!!
D Class had a pitch off for the first place award, between Cindy Jones
and John Cummings. With a lot of jokes flying back and forth, Cindy &
John squared off. It was a tight match, but John’s persistence paid off,
and he ended up in first place.
Although a little disappointed in the turn out, the club could understand
it. Originally the tournament was scheduled for July, then a conflict with
the park forced a change in date. The date that was open at their park
happened to land on this weekend, opposite two other Virginia tournaments.
The club, under the leadership of John Cummings, President, is deermined
to be at the October meeting this year, and get their tournament dates
set up on the schedule to avoid this confusion next year.
It’s always a fun time in Dublin. Their next tournament is scheduled
for September 9th, opposite the Raymond Frye, and they’re hoping to see
you if you’re not in Winchester !!
