The D.W. Strickler Memorial Tournament got into full swing
under partly cloudy skies. As the day progressed, the sun came out,
and it was a perfect day to pitch horseshoes.
34 pitchers signed up, making 6 classes. In B class,
there was a 4-way tie for first place, those being Horace Phillip, Thelma
Dunivan, Jessie Johnson, and Jim Barr. The play-off was a laddered
event, with Jim and Jessie pitching each other first, and Thelma
and Horace having byes. Jessie moved up a rung on the ladder, and
pitched Thelma, Horace sitting out another one, eating watermelon.
Thelma won and advanced to the position to pitch Horace. Horace came
out the victor, seizing the first place trophy, Thelma at second,
Jessie third, and Jim fourth.
In C class, David Cowan, Jr. pitched a game of 24 shoes,
producing 18 ringers, averaging 75% against Charlie Carter. David
won 44-0.
D class, Ray Staton and Robert Tinley were neck
to neck midway in their game, each with 23 and 22 points respectively,
and 12 ringers each. At 50 shoes they were tied, both points
and ringers. Robert pulled it off with the 58th shoe, winning 41-38,
and each pitching 21 ringers. |
