The Ed Hunt Singles got off to a hot start
this year. The pitchers were hot, in a competitive mood and the temperature
was blazing. It may have not broken a record in the Crozet area but it
surely came close. Temps in the 90's set the tone for the day. What
a difference between Crozet's last two tournaments! From a cold chilly
rain to the heat of summer within a month.
Out of five classes, playoffs were held in
four of them.. Phillip Law won D Class. He held on to his lead in his last
game against Jason Lux by just a couple of points, finishing out with a
perfect day - 7 and 0.
I had missed the opportunity of taking
a photo of Golden Salmon, a new pitcher from the Grottoes club, as he was
receiving his trophy . The smile on his face when he was handed the trophy
will stay with me for a long time. He was grinning ear-to-ear ! He
beat out James Shifflett (Crozet), another newcomer, to take home the trophy.
Gold ended up with a 21.20%
After a 2 year break from pitching, George
Byrd and newcomer Randall Weakly, out of Madison, fought it out in
Class C. Sweating through the playoff, George managed to keep the upper
edge and won with 6 and 1. It's great to see George back.
Randall and his good buddy, Ronnie Hicks,
have been to most of the tournaments this year. Both are enjoying it so
much that they are considering joining the Crozet Club. Keep up the hard
work. A class pitchers in the making?
Long time rivals, Horace Phillips and Mo Moser,
went head-to-head in a playoff in B class. Horace commented when receiving
his trophy "It was worth the trip." B Class was real tight going
in at the start, and at the finish.
A Class ended up the tightest of all the classes.
Long time friends and rivals , Alvin Perry, Nathan Davis, Noah Roach and
Ronnie Williams all tied for 1st at the end of 7 rounds each with
5 wins, 2 losses. After 2 playoff rounds, Nathan Davis edged out
the others winning first with 7 wins and 2 losses, ending the day with
a 65.79%. Alvin finished 2nd by percentage with 68.81% and Ronnie
3rd with 63.45%. Betty Riley ( Tournament Director) said "A four way tie
in A class, this hasn't happened for a long time. Those men were fighting
each other for first. I don't know if this says anything with just the
40 foot pitchers or not, but it made a difference in this one."
Betty went on to say "We had a great tournament
with 4 playoffs. 33 pitchers enjoyed the lovely weather. Thanks to all
the pitchers and those who helped." |
