| What's a little bit of water? Twenty inches of rain
just a mere 4 miles away was not enough to stop the pitchers who
attended our tournament the day after Hurricane Isabelle roared through
central Virginia. Stuarts Draft was indeed flooded on Friday. Some
trees down in the area, but the biggest factor was all the water.
Friday
afternoon, our club members opened all the
courts, bailed and sponged out the water, and left them uncovered
overnight.
Saturday morning, all but 2 courts where in great shape. The value of
tamping the clay before closing the pits was proven once again. It
saved us from a mess! Fifteeen pitchers attended on what was a spectular day of weather. Bright clear skies and very comfortable temperatures. Both Randy Rickard and Granville Weakley had a few lucky games, that gave them the opportunity to pitch for the Championship title. In the play between them, Randy pitched 16 ringers out of 34 shoes to take first place. B Class also ended up in a playoff between James Owen and Pat Snelgrove. Pitching his high game of the day at 45.65% 46 shoes later James took 1st place. Finishing the day with an overall of 37.6%. Terry Sparks and Pam Matsko had to battle it out in a play off in C Class. It turned out to be a hot game for Terry, and 40 shoes later he emerged the victor. Thanks go to all those who travelled to pitch, what a fine way to end the season. |
